This refers to the intention of the Buddha, and for the Hearer Arhat, the Alaya consciousness exists. However, it can be said that one part of the error of the afflicted mind that clings to the self of a person, its basis, can be removed. Such an Alaya consciousness was not taught because it was feared that the Lesser Vehicle practitioners would mistake it for being the same as the "self" of the Tirthikas. As it is said in the Samdhinirmocana Sutra: "The Alaya consciousness is very deep and subtle, and all seeds flow like a stream of water. If it is clung to as a self, it is not right, therefore I have not taught it to children." The second point is that this is also called "that." As it is said, the so-called Alaya consciousness is the basis of confusion in the three realms and the cause of all material faculties, so it is called the "consciousness of the basis." Since it is the place of the seeds of habit and the reception of all bodies, it is called the "consciousness of the place." Furthermore, it also takes up the four: self, aggregates, desire, and views. Therefore, in order to connect the continuum of the body and cause them to manifest and accomplish, it is taken up, so it is also called the "consciousness of taking up." The white and black karma produced by the seven consciousnesses, and the seeds of the three: object, faculty, and consciousness, will not be mixed separately, and their nature, whether virtuous or non-virtuous, will not be predicted, but will be accumulated in the Alaya consciousness, so it is also called the "Vipaka consciousness." For example, just as rainwater flows into rivers, and rivers also flow into the ocean and accumulate. That is to say, the six consciousnesses are rainwater, the mind accumulating karma is the river, and the Alaya consciousness is like the ocean. Any karma that is complete with the three: preparation, main action, and subsequent action, is called "accumulated karma," which is definitely capable of producing results. From the cessation of karma until its result matures, it is called "Vipaka," and this should also be known. Furthermore, when conditions gather, just as waves immediately stir and arise from the ocean, the karma and afflicted mind of the Alaya consciousness of all seeds stir and arise, so it is the "immediately arising mind." That is to say, it causes the seeds that exist on the Alaya consciousness to produce fruits separately without mixing. As it is said in the Abhidharma Sutra: "Consciousness arises from mind, mind arises from Alaya, in Alaya..."
