Therefore, it is the root of all conceptual constructs and afflictions, and is also called the unreal conceptualization. From this, by meditating on the inward-looking afflictions, the things to be abandoned arise. Because of this, the six consciousnesses are also defiled, so the outward-looking afflictions to be abandoned by seeing arise. The third is, as it is said in the sutra, "The six are divided into two." In short, the nature of these two is that the mind immediately after the cessation of the six in the alaya is the place or connector that produces the later six consciousnesses. The afflicted mind becomes the place that defiles the six consciousnesses. Therefore, the immediately preceding mind has the power to generate the six consciousnesses, and the afflicted mind has the power to defile. Therefore, the mind abiding in the alaya is divided into two types. If the immediately preceding mind generates pure wisdom such as faith, then there will be no afflictions at that time, so it is called the undefiled mind in the sutras. The detailed meaning of these is explained in the Compendium of Mahayana: The mind is of two kinds, because it is the place where the immediately preceding cause acts, it is called the mind immediately after the cessation of consciousness, which is the place where consciousness arises. The second is the afflicted mind, which is constantly associated with the four afflictions: the view of the aggregates, the pride of thinking "I", attachment to self, and ignorance. This is also the place where consciousness is completely defiled. Consciousness is generated by one place and defiled by the second place. Because it can recognize objects, it is consciousness. Because it is immediately preceding and clings to self, the mind is of two kinds. It is said in the sutra that affliction is the word for clinging to self, therefore, this is the root of all the delusions of samsara in the three realms. Therefore, this mind is not present in the cessation samadhi that transcends the three realms, the Arhats, and the samadhi of the noble Bodhisattvas. The difference in existence in the non-conceptual samadhi should also be understood. Third, regarding the explanation of the causal condition, the alaya consciousness, there are two parts: briefly showing it from the perspective of the name, and explaining in detail the nature of its distinctions.

Firstly, it is said from 'special' to 'knowing,' meaning that for those Mahayana practitioners who possess the wisdom to truly realize the profound reality of the Dharma, surpassing the wisdom of the Lesser Vehicle's realization of selflessness. All-knowing Buddha clearly stated that the Alaya-consciousness is the cause and condition of the six aggregates. As stated in the Abhidharma Sutra: 'The Alaya-consciousness is the seed of all dharmas. Therefore, I speak of the Alaya-consciousness to the noble ones.' Furthermore, the master Vasubandhu's commentary on the Thirty Verses also briefly summarizes its characteristics: 'That Alaya-consciousness is the seed of all Vipaka (resultant), constantly associated with touch, attention, feeling, perception, and volition. Its feeling is neutral; it is unobscured and indeterminate. It is like a flowing river; it ceases at the state of Arhat.' As it is said. Because it is the basis from which all knowable dharmas arise, it is called Alaya. Then, one might wonder how it possesses the name of consciousness? Because there are instances where the Tathagatagarbha or Buddha-nature is also referred to as Alaya, to distinguish their differences. If consciousness refers to seeing meaning, then how is its meaning established here? Because it possesses Vipaka and all seeds, the clarity of the object and the Alaya exist like the possessor of an object, becoming the proximate cause of the seven consciousnesses, and mutually becoming the cause and condition of things, therefore it is called consciousness. Because everything is accumulated there, it is Vipaka, like rainwater to the ocean. Because it gives rise to all proximate conditions, from the perspective of becoming a cause, it is all seeds. Because it is constantly surrounded by the five pervasive elements of touch, attention, feeling, perception, and volition, mental factors also become a distinction of consciousness. The feeling of the Alaya's retinue is neutral. The Alaya itself is by nature unobscured and indeterminate, like the clarity of a mirror. Like a flowing river, the seeds of the object, the possessor of the object, and the faculties flow continuously, therefore, it ceases at the state of Arhat.
