As it is said, the bodhisattva who does not regress, perfects the merit pāramitā, and becomes completely pure. Second, the extensive explanation is divided into three: explaining the six consciousnesses, explaining the immediately following afflictive conditions and mind, and explaining the causal condition, the ālaya-vijñāna. The first of these is further divided into four: identifying the six consciousnesses, identifying the objective condition, identifying the dominant condition, and explaining from where these arise. The first is: The six consciousnesses are, as it is said. Among these, what is the nature of the six consciousnesses that initially take and hold onto objects? They are the eye consciousness that grasps forms, the ear consciousness that grasps sounds, the nose consciousness that grasps smells, the tongue consciousness that grasps tastes, the body consciousness that grasps tactile objects, and the mind consciousness that grasps phenomena, these are the six consciousnesses. The second is: From the objective condition to the six. As it is said, these six consciousnesses cannot be inherently established by their own nature, but arise dependent on the four conditions. That is, they first rely on the objective condition, and because there are six objective realms, the consciousnesses that cognize them also become six. What are these? They are forms, etc., from sounds, smells, tastes, tactile objects, and phenomena, which are known as different names for objects or meanings, these are the six. In general, in terms of the five aggregates, the faculties and their objects are all included in the pure form aggregate. The causal form is the elements of earth, water, fire, and wind, which are the four great elements. The resultant form is the five faculties and five objects that arise from the four great elements, totaling ten. And non-manifest form, totaling eleven. Here, the five objects such as forms, which are the objects of the eye, are explained. The specific divisions within these are, as the Abhidharmakośa says: Forms are of two kinds, totaling twenty. Sounds have eight kinds. Smells have four kinds, tastes have six kinds. Tactile objects have eleven kinds of nature. And also, states of distraction and mindlessness, whatever follows virtue and non-virtue, with the great elements as the cause, this is non-manifest form. And so on, there are detailed classifications. Phenomena are of two kinds: conditioned and unconditioned. Each of these also has eight.

The classification of the three unconditioned phenomena, etc., should be learned from elsewhere. Third, it is purified from the self-cause. It is said that the master cause of the six consciousnesses is the six flawless faculties, such as the eye faculty being like a Sumana flower, the ear faculty being like the awn of a barley ear, the nose faculty being like aligned copper needles, and the tongue faculty being like a half-moon shape. These faculties are believed to exist within their respective supports, and the body faculty, like the soft skin of a bird's touch, is said to pervade the entire body. All five faculties are clear with respect to the objective form, generating the ability for consciousness to apprehend the object. The meaning of 'having form' is that it is composed of minute particles or arises from the four elements. 'Clear' means that, like a clear image in a mirror, other particles do not obstruct its position, and it is connected with consciousness, so the object is clear. It is said that this is also connected with the inner seed or potential. In the Compendium of Vehicles (Thegpa Duspa), it is asserted that the apprehended aspect of the Alaya consciousness appears as the five faculties, and there is no contradiction in any of this. The mind faculty is the very arising and ceasing in the Alaya consciousness immediately after. It is also said that immediately after the cessation of the six, it is the mind element, and it is also said to be a differentiation of the power of the Alaya consciousness, and so on. But in essence, that which acts as the door for the arising of mental consciousness is considered the mind faculty, because phenomena are the birthplace of conditioned and unconditioned realms, and these two are interdependent as object and subject. Fourth, it depends on both. It is said that in this way, the six objects and six faculties, that is, both object and subject, are not established in ultimate truth except for what arises from the mind. So what is this appearance? This appearance as external objects and internal faculties is due to the power of ignorance from beginningless time, grasping what is non-dual as dual, and the seed of this habit being placed in the Alaya consciousness, it appears by relying on the awakening of that realm. Although forms, sounds, smells, tastes, and tactile objects appear to the five consciousnesses such as the eye, etc., which see external objects, they do not know the difference between 'this is a pillar' and 'this is a pot.' As it is said in the scriptures: 'The eye consciousness knows blue, but it does not think 'it is blue.'
