cannot be created. Furthermore, the Sautrāntika school of the Lesser Vehicle asserts that external objects such as forms, which appear manifestly, are merely conventional truths. Therefore, they do not appear manifestly to consciousness. Even when the senses and their objects meet, something resembling a pattern of incense ash appears. The appearance of external objects is established upon consciousness, while the self-characterizing meaning, as the essence of a pig or a hidden woman, exists as truly existent. Thus, it generates the self, i.e., the inner person, and the outer realm of the world or the objects of experience. That is what they say. But this is also untenable. If the pig-woman appears to consciousness, it contradicts the pig-woman. If it does not appear, then the appearance cannot be established either. Secondly, as stated in the sutra, "In all things." This indicates that the fully enlightened Buddha, having been liberated from the two obscurations and their predispositions, directly knows all knowable things as they are and in their entirety. The single, peerless one in the world declared that these three realms are merely the self-nature of mind, defiled by ignorance, and that there is no establishment in reality apart from the mere discrimination of mind. As stated in the Tenth Ground Sutra: "O sons of the Victorious Ones, these three realms are mind-only." The Laṅkāvatāra Sūtra also states: "As images appear in a mirror, appearing without being existent, likewise, without understanding the appearance of mind, two kinds of discrimination arise. Through the connection of the predispositions of discrimination, various minds arise. To people and others, the other appears; the realm of the world is mind-only." In the tantras, it is also said: "Apart from the precious mind, there is neither Buddha nor sentient being. The objects of the basis of consciousness, there is not even a little that is external." Therefore, these entities do not arise from the self as the self, as the tirthikas assert, because the self is already established and does not need to be produced. Nor does the other arise from the other, because if one says "other," it must depend on the self. If there is no self as the basis of dependence, who can be the other? However, if the other produces the other, then the sun should produce darkness, and the potter should produce pots, etc., but such a thing is not possible. Nor is it produced from the combination of both, because it would incur the same faults as the previous two. Or, the self and the other are simultaneous, like the right and left horns, and cannot be causes and conditions for each other. Without a cause, it is like the senses.

It is obvious that seeing sprouts growing from seeds is reasonable. So, how should it be understood? All phenomena encompassed by samsara and nirvana, in terms of ultimate truth, are emptiness beyond the extremes of elaboration, and in terms of conventional appearance, are interdependent arising of cause and effect. Whatever arises dependently, in itself, is empty of true existence established by its own nature. Thus, interdependent arising, its own nature appearing as the duality of grasper and grasped like a moon in water, is the conventional truth of phenomena. The mere appearance itself, its own nature being free from all elaboration, abiding in its own nature of emptiness, is the ultimate truth of the nature of phenomena. As the Essence of Wisdom says: "Just this appearance is conventional, the other is ultimate." And again, in the Condensed Essence of Wisdom: "Conventional is the appearance of duality, truth is like a moon in water. Ultimate truth is free from all characteristics, its place is the eighteen emptinesses." Thus it is said. So, the conventional appearance of duality, and its own nature of emptiness, the ultimate truth, are they one or different? They are not one, because conventional truth is established in illusion, but not in ultimate truth. Ultimate truth is established in the nature of phenomena, but not in conventional truth. For example, a moon in water appears, but is not a real moon, and the real moon itself does not become a moon in water. If they were one, then seeing conventional truth would become seeing ultimate truth, and so on, the commentary says there are four faults. The two truths are also not different, for example, when a rope is mistaken for a snake, in reality the rope exists and the snake does not, but in illusion, existence and non-existence gather on one basis, so they are not different. Similarly, the conventional appearance and the ultimate emptiness are inseparable, therefore they are not established as different. If they were different, then ultimate truth would not become the nature of phenomena of conventional truth, and so on, the commentary says there are four faults. Therefore, the two truths are neither one nor different, but are free from one and different, abiding in the inseparability of appearance and emptiness. Again, as the commentary says: The aggregates and the characteristics of ultimate truth
