It is clear that, in order for those fortunate disciples to realize through subsequent attainment of non-referential compassion, for the sake of benefiting others, it should be specifically stated. This is also admonishing through the gateway of instructions and liberation. As the Second Buddha, Vasubandhu, said: Those who abide in discipline, possess hearing and thought, Should diligently engage in meditation. As it is said. Anyone who desires to attain liberation and the state of omniscience, as a basis, must first protect the stainless discipline, which is the foundation of qualities. As it is said in the "Friendly Letter": Discipline is like the earth for the born and unborn, The foundation of all qualities, the Buddha said thus. As it is said. Those who possess discipline should engage in extensive hearing. Why? Because to attain Buddhahood, one must realize the meaning of the two selflessnesses. To realize that, one must understand the meaning of the scriptures and treatises, and know the scriptural and logical proofs. To know that, one must engage in hearing. If one does not hear, one cannot realize the meaning of the two selflessnesses. If one cannot realize the two selflessnesses, one does not know how to practice the meditation on selflessness. If one does not know how to practice the meditation on selflessness, even if one meditates, the wisdom arising from meditation will not arise. If that does not arise, it is impossible for the path of seeing of the noble ones to arise. If that does not arise, it is impossible to attain the ultimate result of practice, Buddhahood. As it is said in the "Compendium of Vehicles": Without the imprints of hearing, etc., It is not reasonable for that result to arise. And so on, there are many statements in the scriptures. Therefore, if there is no wisdom of hearing, one cannot distinguish between what to accept and what to reject, and whatever one does is weak. In all lifetimes, one will become dull-witted. Even if one meditates, one cannot cut the root of self-grasping. There are many faults such as these. If one possesses hearing, one will be skilled in knowledge and will not be foolish. Because one's own intelligence increases, one will gain fearless confidence in everything. Because the mindstream is completely liberated, one will be happy. One will be counted among the wise. In all lifetimes, one will possess perfect wisdom. One's faculties will be sharp, and one will retain what one has heard. One will meet with Buddhas and Bodhisattvas and be able to engage in meaningful discussions on the Dharma. One will purify one's own obscurations of knowledge. One will be able to turn the wheel of Dharma for others in a way that is not reversed, and so on, many qualities will arise. As it is said in the "Compendium": With wisdom, one will fully know the nature of all phenomena, and also from the three realms

How can one be liberated? O, Supreme among humans, having turned the precious wheel of Dharma, you also teach the Dharma to beings in order to end suffering. Thus it is said. In the Ratnakuta Sutra, it is also said: Through hearing, one understands the Dharmas; through hearing, one abandons what is meaningless; through hearing, one abandons sin; through hearing, one attains Nirvana. And so on, it is extensively taught. If one lacks the wisdom of hearing and contemplation, and does not understand the meaning of the two selflessnesses, and merely engages in foolish meditation, even if one gains some samadhi, one will not be able to abandon the root of afflictions, and thus will fall into samsara. For example, the son of the heretic Nirgrantha, Lhagpa Chö (Laghusmriti), remained in the samadhi of emptiness for twelve years, but was eventually born as a perfected being. As it is said in the Samadhiraja Sutra: Although one may meditate on samadhi, it does not destroy the belief in self. It only makes the field of afflictions more chaotic, like Lhagpa Chö meditating on samadhi. Thus it is said. Having obtained the eye of profound wisdom of hearing and contemplation, one should engage in practice with great diligence. As it is said in the chapter on the Collection of Samadhis: Hearing increases wisdom, and if one possesses both hearing and contemplation, then one should apply oneself to meditation, and from that, one will attain the supreme accomplishment. Thus it is said. In the Arya Bodhisattva Bhumi Sutra, it is also said: O sons of the Victorious Ones, for a Bodhisattva who is a beginner, one should first encourage them to speak out, and after hearing much, encourage them to dwell in solitude. Thus it is said. If one does not engage in meditation, what fault is there? Merely hearing and contemplation without meditation will not directly realize the ultimate truth. As it is said in the Phalchen: Just as describing the sweetness of sugarcane does not make one taste it, but when one eats sugarcane, one tastes the sweetness. Similarly, the meaning of emptiness cannot be tasted through description. When one relies on it and meditates on it, self-awareness will arise within oneself. Thus it is said. Therefore, for those who seek liberation, one must first purify the three doors of body, speech, and mind with the discipline of renunciation, and then cut off exaggerations with the wisdom of hearing, and through the path of reason, hear with the wisdom arising from contemplation.
