Just as one is in the womb, but without knowing it, dwells in a helpless house, experiencing the ultimate suffering of poverty and contempt, etc. Similarly, although the protector, the Sugata-garbha, resides within my own mind, beings who do not know this and have the thought that they are without a protector, whose minds are not at peace due to the power of afflictions, remain in samsara, the source of suffering. The ninth example has three parts: example, meaning, and combined explanation. The first is: 'Just as the shape of molten gold inside grows, peaceful, possessing the nature of external earth, having seen it, those who know the gold inside, in order to purify it, remove the external obscuration.' Thus it is said. Just as the shape of unpoured molten gold inside black mud, with limbs growing, pleasing and beautiful with peace, those possessing the nature of external earth, covered by mud, having seen it, know that there is a shape of gold inside, in order to purify the mud existing on the shape of gold inside, they remove the external obscuration, the mud. The second is: 'The nature of luminosity, even stains, appear in a sudden interval, beings like a source of jewels, purify from obscurations, the supreme Bodhi.' Thus it is said. Like that example, the nature of luminosity of the minds of sentient beings, the stains on it also appear in a sudden interval that can be separated, beings like a source of jewels, purify and remove from obscurations like mud, the victorious ones, having become enlightened in the supreme Bodhi, show the sacred Dharma. The third is: 'Just as a shape made of spotless, blazing gold, fallen into the earth, peaceful, its nature is known by a skilled craftsman, thus removing the earth. Similarly, the all-knowing ones know the pure, gold-like, peaceful mind, by teaching the Dharma, through striking and practicing, thus removing the obscurations.' Thus it is said. Just as an image made of spotless and completely pure, golden light, fallen into the black mud at the time of slaughtering livestock, beautiful and peaceful, its nature is known by a skilled craftsman, thus removing the external mud.

Similarly, the Buddhas who know all knowable things also know that the nature of mind, the Tathagatagarbha, which is like completely pure gold and is naturally peaceful, and then, in order to eliminate obscurations, they practice in the manner of teaching the Dharma, like a tool for removing mud, thereby eliminating the obstacles and obscurations to realizing the nature. Third, summarizing the meaning: Lotus, life bee and, chaff and impure soil, fruit peel, tattered clothes of women, womb and the earth's cave, like the essence of Buddha honey, like gold, like treasure, like tree, precious body and wheel king, like transformation and like golden statue, sentient beings' realm of afflictions shell, unconnected from beginningless time, the mind's nature is stainless, it is said to be from beginningless time. Thus it is said, the lotus flower is not good-looking, life bee and, the chaff of grains and the unclean mud, the land and the fruit peel of trees, tattered and filthy clothes, the womb of women, and the cave of black mud, etc., these summarize the nine metaphors of obscuring dirt. Like the Buddha who is adorned with excellent marks and beauties, like the honey that has taste and essence, like the essence of rice and so on, like the pure gold that does not change, like the great treasure that will never run out, like the tree with fruits, like the beautiful image of a precious body, like the king who rules with the wheel, like the beautiful golden statue, these summarize and show the nine metaphors of the essence to be obscured. The meaning symbolized by these metaphors is: the realm of sentient beings, the obscuration of the Tathagatagarbha, the shell of afflictions, etc., although they are inherently present but unrelated, so they are temporary, but they exist together with the Dharmadhatu from beginningless time. Wherever these exist, the nature of the mind of sentient beings, the Tathagatagarbha, originally exists together with the innate wisdom that is free from defilements from beginningless time.
