For some, the mind of enlightenment will not arise. For those who have generated the mind of enlightenment, if they boast that "I" am superior, and for those who have not generated the mind of enlightenment, they will strongly develop the idea of being inferior. For those who think like this, correct knowledge will not arise. Therefore, clinging to what is incorrect, they will not believe in the correct meaning. Because it is false and temporary, the faults of sentient beings are not real. The real fault is selflessness, and the merit is naturally pure. Clinging to unreal faults and slandering real merits, wise people will not see themselves and other sentient beings as equal, and will not be able to obtain loving-kindness. It is said that, therefore, the essence of the Tathagata is pervasive in all sentient beings. If this is not taught, it will not be heard. If it is not heard, people like me will think, where can I obtain unsurpassed enlightenment? Because of the fault of despising oneself and being lazy, the mind is depressed and discouraged. For some, thinking that one's own nature is the real Buddha, the special mind of enlightenment that wants to make it manifest will not arise, and such a fault will occur. Also, for some, even if they slightly generate the thought of achieving Buddhahood for the benefit of others, they boast that they are dwelling in the great vehicle and are superior or the best. For those who have not generated the mind of enlightenment, because they do not understand that they also have the Tathagata-essence, they will have the idea that "these people are inferior," and such a fault will occur. For those who think that there is no Tathagata-essence, correct wisdom that is free from addition and subtraction will not arise. Therefore, they will cling to the unreal, conventional, temporary defilements as being real, and the fault of addition will occur. For the real meaning, the Dharmadhatu has real merits and is spontaneously accomplished, and they will not believe it, and the fault of slander will also occur. If one observes well, because it is artificial, removable, and temporary, made by causes and conditions, the faults of sentient beings and temporary defilements are not really existent. If it really exists, then the temporary fault will not be empty of both the self of person and the self of phenomena, therefore, the real merits such as power.
