It is widely stated that all phenomena are completely empty and without inherent existence. Later, in the final scriptures that definitively establish the ultimate meaning, such as the Tathagatagarbha Sutra and many others, the truth spoken by the Buddhas, the complete and perfect Awakened Ones, is that all sentient beings possess the seed of Buddhahood, the realm of Dharma is naturally pure and luminous, and it has been spontaneously accomplished from the beginning. Why is this said? If it is said that there is a contradiction between the earlier and later teachings, isn't it inappropriate to say so? The answer is: Secondly, it is said for the purpose of abandoning the five faults that some people have: discouragement, contempt for inferior sentient beings, holding onto what is not true, denigrating the true Dharma, and excessive attachment to self. It is said that the meaning of the earlier and later sutras is not contradictory, which will be explained later. This treatise will explain the necessity of stating that there is the Tathagatagarbha in the Tathagatagarbha Sutra and others. Therefore, it is necessary to say that sentient beings have the seed of Buddhahood, because it prevents the obstacle to one's own striving for enlightenment, which is discouragement, and the obstacle to love for others, which is contempt for inferior sentient beings, and not holding onto the correct reality but holding onto it in a reversed way, and denigrating the correct Dharma, which is the Tathagatagarbha, and excessive attachment to self. Because it is for the purpose of abandoning the faults of those who have these five faults, it is said in this way. Secondly, the detailed explanation has three parts: the intention of how the intermediate teachings are shown, the reason for stating the element in the end, and the detailed explanation of that. The first part has two parts: a brief explanation and a detailed explanation. The first part is: The true limit is separated from all aspects by compounded things. The meaning of afflictions, actions, and maturation is spoken of like clouds and so on. It is said that what is the intention of the intermediate teachings stating that all dharmas are without inherent existence? The true limit of reality refers to being separated in all aspects from the compounded, sudden defilements. It refers to the afflictions of afflictions, and the afflictions of actions, and the aggregates of maturation of these afflictions of actions, etc., the arising of afflictions that appear as real. These are not truly established, like clouds, and like dreams, illusions, and emanations. The second is: Afflictions.

Like clouds is action. Karma is like dream enjoyment. The ripening of afflictions and karma. Aggregates are like illusion and emanation. It is said that the all-pervasive afflictions of desire and other afflictions are like clouds, because they pervade the nature of the mind like the sky and are sudden. The all-pervasive afflictions of action, such as non-virtue, caused by desire and other afflictions, are like the enjoyment of dreams, because they are produced by inverted wisdom and are objects of delusion. The all-pervasive afflictions that arise from the ripening of afflictions and karma, such as the aggregates, are like illusion and emanation, because they depend on conditions and have no truth. Second, the reason for teaching the element at the end is: Having established it in this way before, again in this lineage of the Lama, in order to abandon the five faults, it is taught that the element exists. It is said that in order to gradually guide the disciples, in the first teaching, when the wheel of Dharma of the four truths was turned, some people thought that form and other things really existed. In order to abandon this manifestation of attachment, in the previous middle teaching, when the wheel of Dharma of no characteristics was turned, it was said that all dharmas are emptiness, and that although they appear, they have no self-nature, like clouds, dreams, and illusions. Having thus made the establishment of mainly teaching no self-nature, one will not abandon diligence with just that, so again, by teaching the most profound meaning, therefore, in the last of the Lama or the three wheels, the wheel of Dharma that definitively determines the ultimate truth, so it is the last, because it teaches that the realm of Dharma is constant and uninterrupted, so like a continuum, at this time of explaining the ultimate meaning, in order to abandon the five faults such as discouragement and to obtain the qualities such as joy, the element is naturally pure, and the Tathagatagarbha pervades all beings. Thus, it is very clearly explained in many ways, such as with examples and reasons. Third, the detailed explanation of this is divided into two: how the five faults arise, and how the qualities are obtained by abandoning the five faults. The first is: Thus, if one has not heard this, due to the fault of despising oneself, the mind becomes discouraged.
