In summary, relying on a spiritual friend includes five aspects: the reasons, the divisions, the characteristics of each, the methods of reliance, and the benefits. That is the summary. Among these, first, there are three reasons why one should rely on a virtuous spiritual friend: scriptural authority, reasoning, and examples. Among these, the scriptural authority is: In the "Noble Collection Sutra," it says, "Good disciples, those who have respect for the guru, should always rely on wise gurus. Why? Because the qualities of wisdom arise from them." Also, in the "Noble Eight Thousand Verse Sutra," it says, "Thus, Bodhisattvas, great beings, who wish to fully awaken to unsurpassed, perfect, complete enlightenment, should first approach virtuous spiritual friends, rely on them, and serve them with reverence." That is the scriptural authority. The reasoning is: A person who desires omniscience is the subject. You must rely on a virtuous spiritual friend, this is my pledge, because you yourself do not know how to accumulate merit and purify obscurations. That is the reason. The similar example is like the Buddhas of the three times. The opposite example is like the Pratyekabuddhas. Explaining its meaning: We, in order to attain perfect Buddhahood, must accumulate all the accumulations gathered by merit and wisdom, and the method of accumulating them depends on the virtuous spiritual friend; and we must abandon all the obscurations gathered by afflictions and knowledge, and the method of abandoning them depends on the virtuous spiritual friend. The examples are: A virtuous spiritual friend is like a guide when traveling on an unfamiliar road, or like an escort when going to a dangerous place, or like a ferryman when crossing a great river. Among these, explaining the first example: When traveling on an unfamiliar road, if there is no guide, there is a risk of getting lost, going astray, and wandering. If one travels with a guide, there is no risk of getting lost, going astray, or wandering, and one will reach the destination without wasting effort. Similarly, having entered the path of unsurpassed Bodhi, wanting to reach the state of perfect Buddhahood, if there is no virtuous spiritual friend of the Great Vehicle who is like a guide, then, if one mistakenly enters the path of non-Buddhists, there is a risk of getting lost; if one goes astray into the path of the Hearers, there is a risk of going astray.

There is a risk of getting lost. If you are afraid of getting lost on the path of a Pratyekabuddha, by associating with a virtuous spiritual friend who is like a guide, there will be no risk of getting lost, going astray, or wandering on the path, and you will reach the city of omniscience. As it is said in the biography of Paljor (Dpal 'byung), "A virtuous spiritual friend is like a guide, leading one onto the path to the other shore." The second example is that a dangerous place is one with harm from robbers or wild animals, etc. When traveling there, if there is no escort, there is a risk of harm to body, life, or possessions. If you travel with a strong escort, you will arrive safely. Similarly, having entered the path to enlightenment, accumulating the accumulations of merit and wisdom, and going to the city of omniscience, if there is no virtuous spiritual friend like an escort, there is a risk that the wealth of virtue will be stolen by internal thoughts or afflictions like robbers, and external demons and misleading teachers, etc. There is a risk of cutting off the life of happy migrations. As it is said: "This assembly of afflictions like thieves, If they find an opportunity, they steal virtue, And they also cut off the life of happy migrations." If you do not separate from a virtuous spiritual friend who is like an escort, the wealth of virtue will not be lost, the life of happy migrations will not be cut off, and you will reach the city of omniscience. As it is said in the biography of Paljor, "All the merit of a Bodhisattva is protected by a virtuous spiritual friend." And in the biography of the laywoman Miyowa (Mi g.yo ba), it is also said, "Virtuous spiritual friends are like escorts, taking us to the place of omniscience." The third example is that when crossing a great river, even if you board a boat or raft without a boatman, you will not reach the other side, but will sink into the water or be carried away by the water. If there is a boatman, you will reach the other side through his efforts. Similarly, when crossing the ocean of samsara, if there is no virtuous spiritual friend like a boatman, even if you board the boat of the noble Dharma, you will sink into samsara and be carried away by the stream of samsara. Like that
