It is also said like this. Furthermore, it is said: "Due to wrongly viewing emptiness, those with little wisdom will be destroyed." This was said. In the Root Wisdom, it is also said: "Those who cling to emptiness are said to be incurable." This was said. How are they incurable? For example, if a patient is given a purgative medicine, and both the disease and the purgative are purged, the disease is cured. If the disease is purged but the purgative is not digested, the patient is incurable and will die. Similarly, if clinging to things is eliminated by meditating on emptiness, but if one clings to and views emptiness, then the master of emptiness will become empty, and will fall into the lower realms. In the Precious Garland, it is also said: "The one who exists goes to the happy realms, the one who does not exist goes to the lower realms." This was said. Among them, the latter is more flawed than the former. The fourth meaning is to explain the faults of clinging to both, clinging to things as existing and clinging to things as non-existing are both flawed, because they fall into the extremes of permanence and annihilation. In the Root Wisdom, it is also said: "To say 'exists' is to view permanence, to say 'does not exist' is to view annihilation." This was said. Falling into the extremes of permanence and annihilation is ignorance, and ignorance will not liberate from samsara. Thus, in the Precious Garland, it is also said: "Thus, in the illusory world, clinging to it as existing or non-existing, that is ignorance, and with ignorance there is no liberation." This was said. The fifth meaning is to explain the path that leads to liberation. So, through what is there liberation? Not abiding in extremes, liberation is achieved through the Middle Way. Thus, in the Precious Garland, it is also said: "Truly understanding all phenomena, from the beginning without inherent existence, not relying on the two, permanence and annihilation, liberation from samsara is achieved." And, "Therefore, not relying on the extremes of permanence and annihilation, there is liberation." This was said. In the Root Wisdom, it is also said: "Therefore, the wise should not abide in existence and non-existence." This was said. So, what is the Middle Way itself that abandons the two extremes? In the Noble Jewel Heap Sutra, it says: "What is it that the Bodhisattva Light Protector properly applies to the Dharma? It is like this: individually and correctly realizing the Middle Way Dharmas. Light Protector, what is the individual realization of the Middle Way Dharmas? It is just like that."

Thus conjoin. Radiant One, permanence is called one extreme. Impermanence is called the second extreme. What is in the middle of these two extremes? It is that which cannot be investigated, cannot be expressed, is invisible, and cannot be discerned. Radiant One, this is called the perfect and distinct realization of the Middle Way regarding all phenomena. Radiant One, self is called one extreme. Selflessness is called the second extreme. Thus conjoin. Radiant One, samsara is called one extreme. Nirvana is called the second extreme. What is in the middle of these two extremes? It is that which cannot be investigated, cannot be expressed, is invisible, and cannot be discerned. Radiant One, this is called the perfect and distinct realization of the Middle Way regarding all phenomena. Thus it is said. Shantideva also said: "Neither mind within, nor without, nor found elsewhere, neither mixed nor separate, nowhere without; this is not a little, therefore, the nature of beings is nirvana." Thus it is said. Therefore, although one does not contemplate the two extremes and practices the Middle Way, the Middle Way itself is also inconceivable. In reality, it abides in a state beyond the intellect, free from the consciousness of clinging to it. Jo-bo also said: "Thus, the past mind has ceased and perished, the future mind does not arise or occur, and the present mind is extremely difficult to contemplate. Being without color and form, like the sky, it is not established." Thus it is said. Also, in the Ornament for Clear Realization, it is said: "Not on this shore, nor the far shore, nor in between, not abiding in those places, knowing all times to be equal, is considered the Perfection of Wisdom." Thus it is said. The sixth meaning, explaining the nature of liberation, the nature of nirvana. Now, if all the phenomena of samsara are not established as either things or non-things, is nirvana a thing or a non-thing? Some who have objects of focus think that nirvana exists as a thing. That is not so. In the Precious Garland it says: "If nirvana is not a non-thing, how could it be a thing?" Thus it is said. If it were a thing, nirvana would become a compounded, conditioned phenomenon. If it were a conditioned phenomenon, it would eventually perish. Therefore, in the Fundamental Wisdom it says: "If nirvana
