It should be understood through three things: scripture, reasoning, and analogy. Among them, scripture is: In the Avatamsaka Sutra, it is said: "Oh, sons of the Victorious Ones, these three realms are only mind." Also, in the Lankavatara Sutra, it is said: "The mind disturbed by habitual tendencies, appears as objects, but they are not real, only mind itself, seeing external objects as real is wrong." Reasoning is: The appearance of external objects is the illusion of the mind, this is the proposition. Because it appears as non-existent, like a phantom or a meditation tree. This is the reason. Similarly, because the existent does not appear, and the appearance changes by the power of conditions, and the appearance changes and moves, and the appearance changes by the power of meditation, and due to the different six types of beings. Therefore, the appearance of external objects is only an illusion of the mind. Analogy is: Like dreams and illusions, etc. These show that the object held by external objects is not established. Secondly, if we analyze, some people think that the mind that holds internally, self-knowing and self-illuminating, is actually established. The Pratyekabuddhas and the Mind-Only school think so, but it is not established for three reasons: the mind is considered to be momentary, so it is not established; the mind is not seen by anyone, so it is not actually established; there is no object, so the mind is not established. Among them, the first reason is: Is the mind that you think is self-knowing and self-illuminating, momentary or multiple? If it is said to be momentary, does it have three parts of past, present, and future? Or does it not have three parts of past, present, and future? If it is the former, then the moment is not established, because it will become multiple. As it is said in the Ratnavali: "How can the moment have an end, similarly the beginning, end, and middle should also be examined, thus examining three moments, the world does not abide in a moment." If it does not have three parts of past, present, and future, then the moment will become non-existent. Therefore, the moment is not established, so the mind is also not established. If it is said to be multiple, if the moment is established, then the multiple accumulated by the moment can be established, but the moment is not established, so the multiple accumulated by it is also not established. The multiple is not established, so the mind is also not established. If we analyze the second meaning, the so-called mind, in the three of inside, outside, and middle of the body, where does it exist above and below, should be searched. What is its shape or color?

Having examined well, seek the causes for generating definitive understanding, and methods for shifting the focus, etc., as learned from the guru. If, no matter how you search, you do not see or find it, that means it has no visible or colored characteristics of things. It is not that what exists is not seen or found. The seeker himself is the object of search, or rather, the seeker himself is beyond the scope of consciousness, beyond the scope of speaking, thinking, knowing, and expressing, so it is not seen no matter where you search. As it is said in the Sutra Requested by Light, "Light, the mind is not inside, nor is it outside, nor is it discernible between the two. Light, the mind is unanalyzable, unshowable, unreliant, unmanifest, undiscriminating, and without abiding. Light, all the Buddhas have not seen, do not see, and will not see the mind." The Sutra of Holding the Sacred Dharma also says, "Therefore, the mind is accumulation and exhaustion, knowing well that it is not existent. Do not hold it as an essence, for they are empty in their essence. Dharmas that are empty in their essence, in them there is no establishment. All dharmas are imputed, their nature is thus proclaimed. Overpowering the two extremes, the wise train in the Middle Way. The Dharma of essence is emptiness, that is the path to enlightenment, and that is what I have taught." The Sutra of the Unmoving Nature of Dharma also says, "All dharmas are unborn by nature, do not abide in essence, are separated from all extremes of action and activity, and are beyond the scope of conception and non-conception." Therefore, since the mind is not seen by anyone, it is meaningless to say that it is self-knowing and self-illuminating. The Bodhisattvacaryāvatāra also says, "When no one sees anything, whether it is clear or unclear, like the swagger of a barren woman's son, it is meaningless to say it." Tilopa also said, "Alas! This is self-knowing wisdom, beyond the path of speech, not the realm of the mind's activity." The third meaning is, as explained above, since external objects such as form are not established, the inner mind that grasps them is also not established. The chapter on showing the indivisible nature of the Dharmadhatu also says: Is this mind blue?
