From the Precious Garland: "If it is said that there is self and what belongs to self, this is reversed in the ultimate sense." This means that the self is not established in the ultimate sense. If the self or mind were established and existed in the ultimate sense, then it should also exist at the time of seeing the truth. However, when the mind that sees the truth sees its own nature, the self does not exist, so it is not established. Thus, it is also said in the Precious Garland: "Because of completely knowing the truth as it is, duality does not arise." This means that knowing the truth as it is, is seeing the truth or the mind, and the non-arising of duality is the non-arising of the grasping of self and what belongs to self. Furthermore, if the self or mind were to exist, then it should be examined whether it arises from itself, or from others, or from both, or from the three times. Among these, it does not arise from itself, because is it already established or not? If it is not established, then it cannot be a cause; if it is already established, then it cannot be an effect, and it is contradictory for the self to act on itself. It also does not arise from others, because it is not a cause. How is it not a cause? Thus, the cause is dependent on the effect, so as long as the effect has not arisen, it is not a cause. At the time when it is not a cause, it also cannot produce an effect, so it is the same as before. It also does not arise from both, because the faults of both sides are as previously stated. It also does not arise from the three times, because the past cannot produce, just like a rotten seed whose power is exhausted. The future cannot produce, like the child of a barren woman. The present cannot produce, because it is unreasonable for the one who applies the action, the action that is applied, and the one who applies it. Thus, it is said in the Precious Garland: "Because it is not obtained in itself, others, and the three times, therefore the grasping of self will be destroyed." Not obtained means not produced. Or it should be understood as follows: The so-called self, does it exist on one's own body, or does it exist on the mind, or does it exist on the name? This should be examined. This body is the nature of the four elements, among which, the hardness of the body is earth, the moisture is water, the heat is fire, and the breath and movement is wind. Thus, there is no self or mind on the four elements, just like there is no self or mind on the four elements such as earth and water in the external environment.

It is the same as before. If you think that the mind has a self, then the mind does not exist at all, because neither oneself nor others can see it. Therefore, since the mind itself does not exist, the self does not exist. If you think that the name has a self or a mind, the name is temporarily established, it is not a real thing, and it has no relationship with the self. In this way, through three reasons, it is shown that the self or mind of a person is not established. Now, the refutation of the dharma-self is divided into two parts: showing that the external object of grasping is not established, and showing that the internal grasping mind is not established. First, the first part is explained. Some people think that the external object of grasping is established as a real thing. Among them, the Vaibhashikas say that the nature of the atom is round, without parts, and is a real thing. These aggregates are the external objects such as form. These dust particles are scattered separately, each surrounding, with intervals. Now it appears in one direction, like the tail of a yak and the feathers of a peacock. The reason for not separating is that the karma of sentient beings is aggregated. The Sautrantikas say that these dust particles are also surrounded, without intervals, adhering but not touching. Although they think so, it is not established. Are these dust particles one or many? If it is one, then does this dust particle have a difference in direction? If there is no difference in direction, then all things will become the nature of one dust particle, but this is not the case, because there is clear evidence of direct perception. As it is said in the commentary on the Twenty Verses: When six are combined at once, the atom becomes six parts. If those six are in the same place, then it becomes a coarse dust particle of extremely small quantity. Therefore, if it is one, then does this dust particle have a difference in direction? If there is a difference in direction, then there will be east, west, south, north, and up and down, divided into six parts, thus destroying the view that it is one. If there is no difference in direction, then all things will become the nature of one dust particle, but this is not the case, because there is clear evidence of direct perception. If it is many, then if one is established, then many gathered together can be established, but because one is not established, then many gathered together are also not established. Therefore, because the atom is not a real thing, its nature, the external object, is also not established. So what is it that appears and exists now? This is because one's own mind is confused and appears as an external object, and this is because one's own mind appears in this way. How do you know that this is the case?
