Is it yellow? Is it red? Is it white? Is it madder-colored? Is it like the color of crystal? Is it real? Is it unreal? Is it permanent? Is it impermanent? Is it with form? Is it without form? Discern them separately like this. The mind is without form, cannot be pointed out, has no appearance, is without obstruction, is non-cognitive, therefore it does not abide within, it does not abide without, it does not abide between the two. Completely pure. There is no liberation in that field with the unestablished, it is the nature of the dharmadhatu. Thus it is said. In the Bodhisattvacaryāvatāra it is also said: If there is nothing to be known, what can be known? By what is it known, that is the speaker. And, there the knowable abides near, without something to be known, there is no knowing, thus it is determined. Thus it is said. Among these, it is shown that the mind that grasps is not established. Thus, having stopped grasping at things, in order to negate the second meaning of grasping at non-things. If those two selves are not established in anything, are they non-things? That is also not established as a non-thing. How is it? Those two selves or the mind, if they previously existed in things, and later disappeared, then they could be called non-things. But the two selves or the dharma called mind, from the beginning are not established by their own nature, therefore they have transcended the extremes of existing in things and not existing. Saraha said: Grasping at things is like an animal, grasping at non-things is even more foolish than that. Thus it is said. In the Laṅkāvatāra Sūtra it is also said: External things are neither existent nor non-existent, the mind also has no grasping, completely abandoning all views, that is the nature of unborn. Thus it is said. In the Ratnāvalī it is also said: When things cannot be found, how can they become non-things? Thus it is said. The third meaning explains the fault of grasping at non-existence. If grasping at things is the root of samsara, then wouldn't looking at non-things lead to liberation from samsara? The latter is more faulty than the former. Saraha said: Grasping at things is like an animal, grasping at non-things is even more foolish than that. Thus it is said. As it is said in the Ratnakūṭa Sūtra: Kauśika, it is better to abide with the thought of a person as great as Mount Meru, but it is not like that to grasp emptiness with pride.
