Should be regarded as self. As it is said in the Bodhisattvacaryāvatāra: "Knowing oneself to be faulty and others to be an ocean of good qualities, abandon self-grasping and cultivate taking others." It is said. If one's own afflictions are equal, or if conceptual thought is heavier, then one should train in wind, and meditate on the six practices such as counting and following. As it is said in the Abhidharmakośa: "Counting, following, abiding, observing, transforming, and purifying are the six stages." It is said. If those afflictions are practiced without abandoning, cultivating, or transforming, it is the method of Secret Mantra, or the handprints and views of Marpa and his sons, which should be known from oral instructions, and should be known from the Coemergent Union and the Six Dharmas of glorious Nāropa. These are the stages of mind training, which lead to entering into meditation. If meditation itself is divided, there are three types: meditation that dwells in bliss in this very life, meditation that accomplishes qualities, and meditation that benefits sentient beings. Among these, the first is to make one's own continuum suitable as a vessel. The second is to accomplish the Dharma of the Buddha after one's own vessel is suitable. The third is to benefit sentient beings. If we explain the characteristics of each of these, the first, meditation that dwells in bliss in this very life, is described in the Bodhisattvabhumi: "Furthermore, the meditation of the Bodhisattvas is that which is free from all conceptualizations, generates extreme pliancy of body and mind, is supremely peaceful, free from arrogance, without enjoyment, and free from all signs. This is known as dwelling in bliss in this life." It is said. Among these, being free from all conceptualizations means being without the distraction of the mind that conceptualizes existence, non-existence, and so forth, and abiding in one-pointedness. Generating extreme pliancy of body and mind means that all the coarse burdens of body and mind are destroyed. Being supremely peaceful means entering naturally. Being free from arrogance means being free from the afflictions of views. Without enjoyment means being without the afflictions of existence. Being free from all signs means being free from the enjoyment of forms and so forth. Furthermore, according to the door of all, there are four meditations:

The first, second, third, and fourth. Among these, the first dhyana is with vitarka and vicara. The second dhyana is endowed with joy. The third dhyana is endowed with the bliss of detachment. The fourth dhyana is endowed with equanimity. There are two types of dhyana for accomplishing qualities: the uncommon and the common. Among these, the first is the uncommon, which refers to the various inconceivable and immeasurable samadhis gathered by the lineage of the ten powers, which even the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas do not know even the name of, let alone enter into. These are the uncommon ones. The common ones refer to liberation, overcoming, the birthplaces of cessation, individual perfect knowledge, etc., which are common to the Shravakas. However, this is only the same in name, and their own essence is not the same. The dhyana that benefits sentient beings refers to the dhyana that, relying on dhyana, emanates countless bodies and performs the eleven deeds such as helping sentient beings in need. Then, what are known as shamatha and vipashyana? What is shamatha, and what is vipashyana? Among these, shamatha refers to the act of placing the mind on the mind based on correct samadhi. Vipashyana refers to the subsequent act of thoroughly distinguishing between what should be done and what should not be done. As stated in the Ornament of the Sutras: 'Relying on correct abiding, in order to place the mind on the mind, and in order to distinguish the dharmas, are shamatha and vipashyana.' Thus it is said. Among these, shamatha is actual dhyana, and vipashyana is a part of wisdom. Increasing dhyana refers to increasing it through wisdom, prajna, and dedication, as mentioned above. Purifying dhyana refers to being grasped by emptiness and compassion, as mentioned above. The fruit of dhyana should be understood as being of two types: ultimate and temporary. Among these, the ultimate refers to attaining unsurpassed bodhi, as stated in the Bodhisattva-bhumi: 'The Bodhisattva, having perfected the paramita of dhyana, manifestly awakens to unsurpassed, perfectly complete bodhi, manifestly awakens to Buddhahood.'
