Those will not serve the Lion King. If someone desires to attain perfect Bodhi, and for the sake of sentient beings who are weary of samsara, dwells in a solitary place, abandoning even seven steps away, this is more excellent in merit than the former. Thus it is said. Regarding being weary of samsara, being separated from the eight worldly concerns, and the non-increase of afflictions, it is also from the same Sutra: Thus, one should always be weary of conditioned phenomena, in this way, one will have no desire for anything in the world, and the various defilements will no longer increase. Thus it is said. Among the necessities, the most important is the swift arising of Samadhi, which is also from the same Sutra: One should abandon the love for towns and cities, and always rely on solitary forests, like a rhinoceros, always dwell alone, and before long, one will attain the supreme Samadhi. Thus it is said. The separation of the body from busyness has been explained. In order to separate the mind from conceptual thoughts, one should stay in a solitary place, and contemplate why I have come to this solitary place. Regarding this, I have come to this solitary place because I was afraid and frightened and fled from the distracting places such as towns and cities, and came to this solitary place. Then, what was I afraid of? In the Sutra Requested by the Householder Strong One, it says: Afraid of busyness and frightened of busyness; afraid of gain and honor and frightened of gain and honor; afraid of evil friends and frightened of evil friends; afraid of bad spiritual friends and frightened of bad spiritual friends; afraid of the three poisons of desire, hatred, and ignorance, and frightened of the three poisons of desire, hatred, and ignorance; afraid of the five aggregates, afflictions, the Lord of Death, and the demon of the son of the gods, and frightened of the five aggregates, afflictions, the Lord of Death, and the demon of the son of the gods; afraid of the three lower realms of hell, hungry ghosts, and animals, and frightened of the three lower realms of hell, hungry ghosts, and animals. I came to this solitary place because I was so afraid and frightened. Thus it is said. Having been so afraid and frightened, now that I am in a solitary place, what are my body, speech, and mind doing? One should examine this. Regarding this, if I am in a solitary place, but my body is engaged in killing, stealing, and so on, then what is the difference between me and wild animals, hunters, and thieves? In this way, will their desired goals be accomplished? One should contemplate this and turn away from these actions. Examining speech, if I am in a solitary place, but I am speaking idle talk, divisive speech, harsh speech

If one merely speaks of "earth" and so on, then what difference is there between myself and peacocks, parrots, owls, partridges, and so on? Will this accomplish the desired purpose? One should think in this way and turn back from that state. Examining the mind, if I am in a solitary place thinking of desire, hatred, jealousy, and so on, then what difference is there between myself and deer, monkeys, apes, bears, and so on? Will this accomplish the desired purpose? One should think in this way and turn back from that state. It has already been explained how to make the mind separate from conceptual thoughts. In this way, when both body and mind are separate (from the mundane), distraction will not arise. Because there is no distraction, one can enter into meditative concentration. After that, one should purify one's own mind, which means observing which affliction is the strongest and then contemplating its antidote. That is, the antidote to desire is to contemplate ugliness, the antidote to hatred is to contemplate loving-kindness, the antidote to ignorance is to contemplate dependent origination, the antidote to jealousy is to contemplate equality of self and others, and the antidote to pride is to contemplate exchanging self and others. If the afflictions are equally strong or if there are many conceptual thoughts, then one should practice wind yoga. Among these, if one's own desire is strong, one should contemplate ugliness in this way: First, contemplate that one's own body is composed of thirty-six impure substances such as flesh, blood, skin, bones, tendons, pus, bile, phlegm, snot, saliva, feces, and so on. Then go to a charnel ground and see corpses that have been brought to the charnel ground, one day, two days, three days, four days, five days after death, corpses that are swollen, bloated, blackened, and eaten by insects, and then contemplate in relation to oneself: My body is also of such a nature, of such a dharma, and will not transcend such a dharma. Or, seeing corpses that have been brought to the charnel ground, only skeletons remain, with flesh still clinging to them, veins crisscrossing like a net, skeletons broken into pieces, or bones that have turned the color of conch shells after many years of death, or turned the color of ashes, one should also contemplate in relation to oneself: My body is also of such a nature, of such a dharma, and will not transcend such a dharma.
