Sa. Samādhi itself also establishes all beings in the three bodhi. Thus it is said. The nature of samādhi is: the nature of śamatha, the mind abiding single-pointedly in virtue within the mind. Thus, in the context of explaining the nature of samādhi in the Bodhisattvabhūmi, it is said: the mind is one-pointed, the mind abides in virtue. Such samādhi is also obtained from abandoning the opposing factor of distraction. Therefore, first one should abandon distraction. And abandoning distraction is solitude, that is, the body is solitary from busyness, and the mind is solitary from conceptual thoughts. Thus, in the Bodhicaryāvatāra it is said: By solitude of body and mind, conceptual thoughts do not arise. Therefore, first, the body should be solitary from busyness, which should be understood through six points: the characteristics of busyness, the causes of busyness, the faults of busyness, the characteristics of solitude, the causes of solitude, and the benefits of solitude. Among these, the characteristics of busyness are: being distracted together with self, children, wife, retinue, and possessions. The cause of busyness is: attachment, that is, attachment to sentient beings such as children, wives, and servants, attachment to gains such as food and wealth, and attachment to fame such as praise, therefore not abandoning busyness. Thus it is said: Because of attachment and craving for gains etc., one does not abandon the world. The faults of busyness are: to be understood in two ways, common and specific. Among these, from the common aspect, in the Adhyāśayasamcodana Sūtra it is said: Maitreya, these are the twenty faults of busyness. What are the twenty? That is, the body is not restrained, the speech is not restrained, the mind is not restrained, the afflictions are heavy, one is also tainted by worldly talk, the demon finds an opportunity, one relies on carelessness, one does not attain śamatha and vipaśyanā, and so on. From the specific aspect, the fault of attachment to sentient beings is that one does not attain bodhi. Thus, in the Candrapradīpa Sūtra it is said: Desires are always closely followed, craving is generated for children and wives, by relying on a blameworthy household, when will one attain the unsurpassed fruit?

Supreme enlightenment cannot be attained. Thus it is said. Also in the Bodhisattvacharyavatara, it says: "If one is attached to sentient beings, then one is completely obscured from the truth." Thus it is said. Therefore, attachment to them should be abandoned, as it is said: "They do not work for my benefit, nor do I work for their benefit, so one should flee far away like a child." Thus it is said. The benefit of abandoning these is also stated in the Moon Lamp Sutra: "Those who have abandoned craving for sons and wives, who are afraid of home and have renounced it, will not find it difficult to attain supreme enlightenment." Thus it is said. The faults of attachment to gain and fame are also twofold: one cannot permanently hold onto gain and fame, and they cause suffering. The first is stated in the Bodhisattvacharyavatara: "Together with the accumulation of gain and fame, one has no freedom to go anywhere." Thus it is said. The second is also stated therein: "Whatever one is attached to, when those things are exhausted, it only becomes suffering and increases." Thus it is said. The characteristic of solitude is being separated from those distractions. The cause of solitude is staying alone in a solitary place. Among these, a solitary place is any place such as a charnel ground, a dense forest, a bird's nest, or a wilderness. A distance of five hundred bow-lengths is called a "distant call," and a place beyond one distant call from a village is called a solitary place. The Abhidharmakosha also says: "A measure of five hundred bow-lengths is called a distant call, and that is considered solitude." Thus it is said. The benefits of solitude are many: for the sake of enlightenment and sentient beings, fleeing from distractions and relying on solitude brings many benefits, such as becoming the best of offerings to the Buddhas, developing revulsion for samsara, being separated from the eight worldly dharmas, not increasing afflictions, and generating samadhi in the mindstream. Among these, to explain the first, compared to offering various offerings such as food, drink, and flowers to the fully enlightened Buddha, the thought of staying in solitude for the sake of sentient beings with the mind of enlightenment pleases them even by taking seven steps in the direction of solitude. The Moon Lamp Sutra also says: "Food and drink, as well as clothing, flowers, incense, and garlands"
