So it is said. Then, how to abandon the laziness of sloth? Abandon it like discarding a snake that crawls into your lap, or like extinguishing a fire burning on your head. As it is said in the Bodhisattvacharyavatara: Therefore, if a snake crawls into your lap, just as you would quickly rise, similarly, if sleep and laziness come, you should quickly dispel them. As it is also said in the Suhrllekha: If a fire suddenly breaks out on your head or clothes, even if you put aside the matter of extinguishing the fire, you should strive to ensure that there is no future life, there is nothing more important than that. The laziness of timidity is the discouragement that even if someone like me strives, they will not be able to attain enlightenment. One should not be so discouraged, therefore one should abandon timidity. How should one not be discouraged? As it is said: Bees, flesh flies, bumblebees, and any kind of insects, they can also generate the power of diligence and attain the supreme enlightenment that is difficult to obtain. Since I am born into the human race and can distinguish between benefit and harm, if I do not abandon the practice of enlightenment, why should I not be able to attain enlightenment? So it is said. The laziness of contempt is attachment to non-virtuous deeds such as conquering enemies and accumulating wealth. Those are the direct causes of suffering, therefore they should be abandoned. Diligence is divided into three types: armor-like diligence, applying diligence, and insatiable diligence. The first of these is the perfection of intention. The second is the perfection of application. The third is the limb that brings those two to completion. If we explain the characteristics of each of those separately, armor-like diligence is: From this time onwards, until I have placed all sentient beings in unsurpassed enlightenment, I will not abandon virtuous diligence, like putting on armor in this way. As it is said in the Bodhisattva Pitaka: Shariputra, one should put on inconceivable armor, no matter when the end of samsara comes, one should not relax diligence for the sake of enlightenment. It is also said in the Sutra Explaining the Arrangement of Armor: Bodhisattvas should gather sentient beings.

Furthermore, one should don armor. Because sentient beings are without number, donning armor is also immeasurable. Thus it is said. Also, in the Sutra Requested by the Noble Inexhaustible Intellect, it says: If one dons armor for such an eon, if one does not don armor for such an eon, do not seek enlightenment by counting eons. One should don inconceivable armor. Thus it is said. From the Bodhisattva Grounds: If, for the sake of liberating one sentient being of mine from suffering, I must remain in the hells for a thousand eons, I would gladly do so. What need is there to mention a very short time and very little suffering? Such is the diligence of a Bodhisattva's armor. Thus it is said. There are three kinds of conjoining diligence: diligence in abandoning afflictions, diligence in accomplishing virtue, and diligence in doing the deeds of sentient beings. The first of these is: Afflictions such as desire, and the actions instigated by them, are the root of suffering, so one must guard against them for a long time and prevent them from arising. As it is said in the Engaging in Bodhisattva Deeds: "Abiding in the midst of a crowd of afflictions, A thousand forms appear as ghosts, Just as foxes and the like can defeat lions, A crowd of afflictions can also defeat them." Thus it is said. So how should one guard against them? As it is said: "Like holding a vessel full of mustard oil, Guarding it with a sword at your side, Like the threat of slaughter, A vow-holder should guard in this way." Thus it is said. The diligence in accomplishing virtue is: One should strive to do the six perfections without regard for body or life. So how should one strive? One should strive in five ways of diligence: constant diligence, respectful diligence, unwavering diligence, unretreating diligence, and diligence without pride. Among these, constant diligence means doing it continuously. As it is said in the Cloud of Jewels Sutra: Here, when a Bodhisattva initiates diligence in all activities, how can one not become weary in body and not become weary in mind?
