So, firstly: If someone like Devadatta harms me, it is because he is controlled by hatred, and hatred is controlled by unpleasant objects. Therefore, he has no autonomy. So I have no reason to retaliate against him. As it is said in the scriptures: All are controlled by others, Because of that control, they have no autonomy. Knowing this, like a snake, One will not become angry at all things. So it is said. Examining the fault of one's own actions: The harm I am experiencing now must be because I did a similar harm in a previous life, hence this harm has occurred. Therefore, it is because of the fault of my own bad karma, so there is no reason to retaliate against others. As it is said in the scriptures: I have previously caused such harm to sentient beings, Therefore, it is reasonable for sentient beings to harm me. So it is said. Examining the fault of one's own body: If there were no this body, others would not find a place to strike with weapons and so on. Therefore, because there is this body, that harm has occurred, and there is no reason to retaliate against others. As it is said in the scriptures: His weapon and my body, Both are the cause of suffering. If he uses a weapon and I offer my body, At whom should I be angry? So it is said. Examining the fault of one's own mind: One's own mind does not grasp the good body that others harm, but instead grasps the bad body full of sores, therefore it is troubled by harm. Therefore, it is the fault of one's own mind, and there is no reason to retaliate against others. As it is said in the scriptures: Like a boil resembling a human form, Intolerable to touch, full of suffering, Blinded by desire, I have grasped it, At whom should I be angry for the harm done to it? So it is said. Examining that there is no difference between those with faults: As it is said in the scriptures: Some are deluded and commit faults, Some are deluded and become angry, Among them, who is without fault? And who is with fault? So it is said. Therefore, one should avoid faults and be patient. Examining that it brings benefit: Relying on the harmer, one cultivates patience, Cultivating patience purifies sins, Purifying sins perfects accumulations, Perfecting accumulations leads to enlightenment. Therefore, this harmer is actually a great help, so one should be patient. As it is said in the scriptures: Relying on these, Patience purifies my many sins. And so on, it is said.

Examining the Greatness of Patience: To achieve Bodhi, the perfection of patience is indispensable. To cultivate patience, it is indispensable to have someone who causes harm. Therefore, this causer of harm is a virtuous friend of the Dharma, a benefactor, so one should be patient with harm. It is said: "May I rejoice in my enemy, who has become a companion in the practice of Bodhi. Because I have accomplished these, therefore, this fruit of patience should first be honed here, for in this way, he is the cause of patience." It is said. Examining pleasing the Buddha: It is said: "Furthermore, for the unwavering friends, who have done immeasurable benefits, what else can repay them except making sentient beings happy?" It is said. Examining great benefits: It is said: "Making these happy is a great deal, in this way it is a perfect Paramita." It is said. In the Bodhisattva-bhumi, it is said to cultivate patience by generating five perceptions. It is said: "For the one who causes harm, generate the perception of extreme loveliness, as well as the perception of merely following the Dharma, as well as the perception of impermanence, as well as the perception of suffering, as well as the perception of complete possession." It is said. The first of these is: "This sentient being who is causing harm now, in other previous lifetimes, it is impossible that they have not been parents, siblings, or teachers. Their benefits to me are countless. Now, for such harm, I think I should not retaliate, and endure with the perception of extreme loveliness." The perception of merely following the Dharma is: "This one who is causing harm is dependent on conditions, it is merely an idea, merely Dharma. For this, whether it is the one who scolds, the one who strikes, the one who reveals faults, or the one who imposes the eight prohibitions, there is no self, sentient being, life, or birth-giver, so think and endure." The perception of impermanence is: "Sentient beings are impermanent, they are of the nature of death. The ultimate harm is separation from life. Thus, sentient beings will naturally die, so there is no need to take life, so think and endure." The perception of suffering is: "All sentient beings are afflicted by the three sufferings, I should liberate them from suffering, and accomplish happiness."
