That is the view. Among them, there are four places like defeat. In the twentieth precept of the Compendium of Meanings of the Bodhisattva Grounds, it says: "Due to attachment to gain and respect, praising oneself and disparaging others; being stingy and not giving wealth to those who are suffering and without protection; not listening to others' confessions, angrily rebuking others; abandoning the Mahayana and teaching what appears to be the true Dharma." It is said. The forty-six misdeeds also come from there: not offering to the Three Jewels, following the mind of desire, and so on. The discipline of accumulating virtuous dharmas is that after properly taking the vows of a Bodhisattva, whatever accumulation of virtuous deeds of body and speech is done for the sake of great Bodhi, in short, is the discipline of accumulating virtuous dharmas. What is that? From the Bodhisattva Grounds: Relying on and abiding in the discipline of a Bodhisattva, one strives in listening, thinking, meditating, and delighting in solitude. Respecting and serving the lamas, serving the sick and caring for the sick, giving generously and praising virtues, rejoicing in the merits of others, enduring insults, dedicating merit to Bodhi and making vows, offering to the Three Jewels and striving diligently, abiding in mindfulness, guarding with mindfulness, guarding the doors of the senses and knowing the measure of food, not sleeping in the first and last parts of the night but striving in yoga, relying on holy beings and virtuous friends, examining one's own faults and correcting and abandoning them. Practicing, guarding, and increasing such dharmas is called the discipline of accumulating virtuous dharmas. It is said. The discipline of benefiting sentient beings, in short, should be understood as thirteen types. What are they? From the Bodhisattva Grounds: Helping meaningful activities, relieving the suffering of sentient beings, showing the way to those who do not know the method, being grateful and repaying kindness, protecting from fears, compassion…

To dispel the sorrow of those who suffer, to provide resources for those who lack them, to gather the wheel of Dharma well, to act in accordance with the mind, to delight them with true qualities, to subdue them well, to frighten them with miracles, and to make them desire. Thus it is said. Furthermore, in order for a Bodhisattva to inspire faith in others and not to degenerate himself, he should abandon the impure actions of the three doors of body, speech, and mind, and rely on the three pure actions. Among them, the impure actions of the body are: abandoning wild behaviors such as running around without purpose. The pure actions are: abiding in calmness and gentleness, and maintaining a smiling face. Thus it is said: Thus, act freely, always keep a smiling face, completely abandon anger, frowns, and displeasure, and treat all beings with sincerity. Thus it is said. Furthermore, how should one look when looking? Even when looking at sentient beings with the eyes, one should look with an upright and loving attitude, thinking in the heart: I rely on these beings to attain Buddhahood. Thus it is said. How should one sit when sitting? Do not sit with legs outstretched, nor rub hands together casually. Thus it is said. How should one eat when eating? Again, as it is said: Do not stuff your mouth full of food, do not make noise, and do not eat with your mouth open. Thus it is said. How should one act in conduct? Do not carelessly throw beds and other things with noise. Also, do not open or close doors violently, but always maintain humility and joy. Thus it is said. How should one sleep when sleeping? As it is said: Sleep in the direction you desire, like the sleeping posture of the Blessed One when he passed into Nirvana. Thus it is said. The impure actions of speech are: abandoning excessive speech and sharp speech. Among them, the faults of excessive speech are mentioned in the "Noble Auspicious Cloud Sutra": Thus it is said: Children will degenerate from the excellent Dharma, their minds will become ungentle and harsh, and they will be far from Shamatha and Vipassana. These are the faults of liking to talk. They always lack respect for the Lamas, but like defiled speech, abide in meaningless things, and their wisdom declines. These are the faults of liking to talk. And so on.

Thus it is said. The fault of sharp speech is, as stated in the "Moon Lamp Sutra": Whatever mistakes one sees, do not proclaim those faults. Whatever kind of deeds one has done, one will receive the corresponding result. Thus it is said. Also, in the "Sutra Teaching That All Dharmas Are Without Arising": If one speaks of the downfalls of a Bodhisattva, one will be far from Bodhi. If one speaks with jealousy, one will be far from Bodhi. And so on. Therefore, one should abandon excessive and sharp speech. How then should one purify the actions of speech, how should one speak? As it is said: When speaking, one should be sincere and connected, clear in meaning and pleasing to the ear, abandoning attachment and hatred, speaking gently and appropriately. Thus it is said. The impure actions of mind are: attachment to gain and respect, attachment to sleep and drowsiness, and so on. Furthermore, the fault of attachment to gain and respect is, as stated in the "Sutra Encouraging Higher Intention": Maitreya, a Bodhisattva should regard gain and respect as causing attachment. One should recognize that gain and respect cause anger. One should recognize that gain and respect cause ignorance. One should recognize that gain and respect cause deceit. One should observe that gain and respect are not approved by all Buddhas. One should observe that gain and respect steal the roots of virtue. One should observe that gain and respect are like a prostitute who seduces others. And so on. Even if one obtains gain, one will not be satisfied. As stated in the "Sutra of the Meeting of Father and Son": Like water seen in a dream, even if one drinks it, one will not be satisfied. Likewise, if one associates with the qualities of desire, one will not be satisfied. Thus it is said. Having considered this, one should reduce desires and be content. Also, the fault of being fond of sleep is, as it is said: Whoever is fond of sleep and drowsiness, their wisdom will become very weak. Their mind will also be completely lost, and they will always lose wisdom. Thus it is said. Whoever is fond of sleep and drowsiness will become ignorant, lazy, indolent, and their wisdom will be confused. Non-humans will find an opportunity, and when living in the forest, they will be harmed.
