And, impure fields and impure means. Among them, impure intention is: evil intention and inferior intention. Among them, giving alms with evil intention is: giving alms in order to harm others, giving alms in order to desire fame in this life, and giving alms in order to compete with others. These three should be abandoned by Bodhisattvas. As it is said in the Bodhisattva-bhumi: "A Bodhisattva does not give alms in order to kill, imprison, mutilate, imprison, or expel others." And "A Bodhisattva does not give alms for the sake of fame and praise." And "A Bodhisattva does not give alms even to compete with others." Thus it is said. Inferior almsgiving is: giving alms out of fear of poverty in the next life, and giving alms out of desire to obtain the bodies and enjoyments of gods and humans. Both of these should not be done by Bodhisattvas. As it is said: "A Bodhisattva does not give alms out of fear of becoming poor." And "A Bodhisattva does not give alms relying on Indra, the Wheel-turning King, and Isvara." Thus it is said. Other impure almsgiving is also said to be abandoned in the Bodhisattva-bhumi. If we summarize the meaning of these, abandoning impure objects is: Bodhisattvas should not give poison, fire, weapons, etc. if the beggar himself will be harmed, or if he begs in order to harm others. In the Ratnavali it is said: "If poison is beneficial to someone, it should be given to him. Even the best food, if it is not beneficial, should not be given to him. Just as cutting off a finger is said to be beneficial to someone who is entangled by a snake, so the Muni said that benefiting others should also be done with suffering." If you beg, do not give alms. Thus it is said. Fishing and hunting tools and their methods, etc., in short, anything that causes harm and suffering should not be given to beggars. Parents should not be given away. Parents should not be used as collateral. One should not give away children and wives, etc., to others who want them when they are unhappy.

Do not do it. Even though you have many possessions, do not give little. Do not give accumulated gifts. Abandoning impure fields means: Even if a god of the demon race comes to ask for your body, do not cut off your own body and limbs to give. Do not give your body to beings who are blessed by demons, or to beings who are insane or mentally disturbed. Because they have no desired objects, and because their minds are not free, it is all in vain. Do not give food and drink to beings who are already full. Abandoning impure means means: Do not give alms when you are unhappy, angry, or quarreling. Do not give alms with contempt for the wicked and disrespect. Do not give alms by mocking, threatening, or showing off your power to beggars. There are three meanings to practicing pure giving: objects, fields, and means. The first is divided into two: inner objects and outer objects. Among them, inner objects refer to what belongs to one's own body. As it is said in the Sutra Requested by the Son of No Greed: "If someone wants a hand, give a hand. If you want a foot, give a foot, if you want an eye, give an eye, if you want flesh, give flesh, if you want blood, give blood." and so on. That is to say, a beginner Bodhisattva can give up his whole body when he has not yet developed the mind of equality between himself and others, but he must protect his body and not give up the field. As it is said in The Way of the Bodhisattva: "If there is no pure compassion, one should not give up this body. How can this body accomplish great benefits for oneself and others?" External objects are: food, drink, clothing, mounts, sons and wives, etc., all obtained according to the Dharma. As it is said in the Sutra Requested by the Son of No Greed: "External objects are: wealth, grain, money, gold, jewels, ornaments, horses, elephants, sons and daughters." and so on. That is to say, a lay Bodhisattva can give up all internal and external objects. The Ornament of the Sutras says: The body and possessions of a Bodhisattva
