In the Ornament of Precious Liberation, Chapter Eleven, which explains the categories of the six perfections. Regarding the extensive explanation of the branches, there are six aspects. First, regarding the perfection of generosity, the summary is: Considering the faults and merits, the essence and the divisions, the characteristics of each distinction, the increase and purification, the result and the seven meanings, these are the summary of the perfection of generosity. Thus it is said. Among these, the first is explained: If one does not possess generosity, one will always suffer from miserliness, and will mostly be born as a hungry ghost. Even if one is born as a human or the like, one will be poor and distressed due to stinginess. As it is said in the Collection of Noble Ones: The miserly will be born in the realm of hungry ghosts. Even if they are born as humans, they will be poor at that time. It is also said in the Vinaya Sutra: When the grain sprouts, the hungry ghosts replied: We are stingy and miserly, and have not given even a little charity. We have arrived in the world of hungry ghosts. Thus it appears. Furthermore, if one does not possess generosity, one cannot accomplish the benefit of others, nor can one attain enlightenment. As it is said: Without the experience of giving, there is no enjoyment. One cannot fully gather sentient beings. What need is there to mention attaining enlightenment? Conversely, if one possesses generosity, one will have enjoyment and attain happiness in all lifetimes. As it is said in the Collection of Noble Ones: The generosity of a Bodhisattva cuts off the path of hungry ghosts. It also cuts off poverty and all such afflictions. When practicing, one will obtain endless and increasing enjoyment. Thus it is said. It is also said in the Letter to a Friend: By properly giving charity, there is no better supreme friend than generosity to reach the other shore. Thus it is said. It is also said in the Introduction to the Middle Way: All these beings desire manifest happiness, and the happiness of people is not without enjoyment. Knowing that enjoyment also arises from generosity, the Teacher first spoke of generosity. Thus it is said. Furthermore, if one possesses generosity, one can also accomplish the benefit of others. By gathering them with generosity, one can place them in the Dharma. As it is said: With generosity, one ripens all sentient beings who have become miserable. Thus it is said. Furthermore, if one possesses generosity, one can obtain the unsurpassed

It is also easy to accomplish enlightenment. As it is said in the *Bodhisattva Pitaka*: "It is not difficult to attain enlightenment by giving alms." It is also said in the *Noble Cloud of Jewels Sutra*: "Giving is the enlightenment of the Bodhisattva." Furthermore, in the *Sutra Requested by the Householder Dṛḍhaśūra*, the merits of giving and the faults of not giving are alternately explained, as it is said in the sutra: "Whatever is given is mine. Whatever is kept at home is not mine. Whatever is given is meaningful. Whatever is kept at home is meaningless. Whatever is given does not need to be guarded. Whatever is kept at home needs to be guarded. Whatever is given is without fear. Whatever is kept at home is with fear. Whatever is given shows the path to enlightenment. Whatever is kept at home shows the direction to the demonic side. Whatever is given becomes great enjoyment. Whatever is kept at home does not become great enjoyment. Whatever is given is enjoyment that never ends. Whatever is kept at home will be exhausted." And so on. The nature of giving is to completely give away possessions with a non-attached mind. As it is said in the *Bodhisattvabhūmi*: "What is the nature of giving? It is the mind that arises together with non-attachment, and the complete giving away of the object to be given, motivated by that." Giving is divided into three types: material giving, fearlessness giving, and Dharma giving. Among them, material giving stabilizes the body of others. Fearlessness giving stabilizes the life of others. Dharma giving stabilizes the mind of others. Furthermore, the first two types of giving accomplish happiness in this life for others, while Dharma giving accomplishes happiness in future lives. If we explain their individual characteristics, first, material giving has two types: impure giving and pure giving. Among them, the first is to be abandoned, and the second is to be practiced. Moreover, impure giving has four types: impure intention and impure object.
