Or, it is because the gods have long lives. Or, all the gods are busy because they are attached to temporary happiness and have no time to strive for virtue. Therefore, the slight suffering of humans now has merit, because it will cause one to become disgusted with samsara, one's pride will be pacified, compassion will arise for sentient beings, and one will fear sinful deeds and be happy to do good. It is also said in the *Bodhicaryāvatāra*: "Furthermore, the merit of suffering is that it eliminates pride by causing weariness, compassion arises for samsara, one avoids sin and rejoices in virtue." Thus it is said. Therefore, it is said that the four types of beings do not have leisure. Even if one is a human, barbarians find it difficult to encounter holy beings. Those with wrong views do not see good deeds as the cause of higher realms and liberation. Being born in a world devoid of Buddhas is because there is no one to point out what should and should not be done. A mute person cannot understand for himself the Dharma that is well-spoken and poorly spoken. Therefore, being separated from these eight is called having perfect leisure. Resources are, one's own five resources and the five resources of others, totaling ten. Among them, one's own five resources are, as it is said: "Human birth, born in the central land, complete faculties, not having reversed the limits of karma, faith in the place." These. Among them, human birth is, having the same fate as humans, possessing the faculties of male and female. Being born in the central land is, being born in a place where one can rely on holy beings. Complete faculties is, not being foolish and mute, having the opportunity to practice virtuous Dharma. Faith in the place is, having faith in the Dharma spoken by the teacher, which is the basis of all pure Vinaya teachings. Not having reversed the limits of karma is, not having committed the five heinous crimes in this life. The five resources of others are, the Buddha appearing in the world, teaching the holy Dharma, the Dharma that has been taught abiding, following the Dharma that abides, and having compassion for others. Therefore, possessing these ten resources of oneself and others is called possessing perfect resources.

Thus, the combination of leisure and endowment is the precious human body. Why is it called precious? Because it is similar to a wish-fulfilling jewel. Because it is difficult to obtain, it is called precious. Because it is of great benefit, it is called precious. Regarding the difficulty of obtaining it, the *Bodhisattva-piṭaka-sūtra* says: "It is difficult to become a human being. It is also difficult to obtain human life. It is difficult to obtain the sacred Dharma. It is also difficult for a Buddha to appear." Also, in the *Karuṇāpuṇḍarīka-sūtra* it says: "It is difficult to be born as a human being. It is also difficult to obtain leisure and endowment. It is also difficult for a Buddha to appear in the world. It is also difficult to have desire for virtuous Dharma. It is also difficult to have correct aspirations." Also, in the *Ārya-stambha-vyūha-sūtra* it says: "It is also difficult to be free from the eight unfree states. It is also difficult to become a human being. It is also difficult to obtain pure leisure and endowment. It is also difficult for a Buddha to appear. It is also difficult to have complete faculties. It is also difficult to hear the Buddha's teachings. It is also difficult to associate with holy beings. It is also difficult to find true spiritual friends. It is also difficult to practice following the true path. It is also difficult to obtain a righteous livelihood. It is also difficult to diligently practice Dharma that is in accordance with Dharma in the human world." Also, in the *Bodhicaryāvatāra* it says: "This leisure is very difficult to obtain." How is it difficult to obtain, by way of example? What kind of person is it difficult for to obtain? For what reason is it difficult to obtain? Regarding the example, the *Bodhicaryāvatāra* says: "Therefore, the Bhagavan said that it is more difficult to obtain a human body than for a blind turtle to put its neck into the hole of a yoke floating in the vast ocean." Like that. From where is it said? From the correct scriptures, as it is said: "This great earth becomes only water, and a person loses a yoke with a single hole in it, which is blown in all directions by the wind. There is a blind turtle that lives for thousands of years." and so on. What kind of person?

It is difficult for beings born in the three lower realms to obtain (a leisure and endowment body). Then, by what causes and conditions is it difficult to obtain? A leisure and endowment body is obtained by accumulating virtuous deeds. However, beings born in the three lower realms are not good at accumulating virtuous deeds and always engage in evil deeds. Therefore, even if one is born in the three lower realms, it is obtained by accumulating less evil deeds and the karma to be experienced in other lifetimes. The great benefit is as stated in the Bodhisattvacharyavatara: "Having obtained a human body, one achieves the meaning of life." Here, "སྐྱེས་བུ་" (skyes bu) (person) in Indian language is called "པུ་རུ་ཥ་" (puruṣa), and the meaning of "པུ་རུ་ཥ་" (puruṣa) is strength or ability. Because a leisure and endowment body has the strength or ability to achieve higher realms and definite goodness, it is called a person. Moreover, since there are three kinds of abilities, superior, middling, and inferior, there are also three kinds of persons, superior, middling, and inferior. As stated in the Lamp for the Path to Enlightenment: "One should know that there are three kinds of persons, small, middling, and great." Here, a small person has the ability to obtain gods and humans without falling into the lower realms. As stated in the sutra: "Whoever, by various means, seeks only the happiness of samsara for himself, that person is called the lowest." A middling person has the ability to be liberated from samsara and obtain the state of peace. As stated in the sutra: "Turning away from the happiness of existence, the nature of turning away from sinful deeds, whoever seeks only his own peace, that person is called the middling." A great person has the ability to obtain Buddhahood for the benefit of sentient beings. As stated in the sutra: "Whoever, because of the suffering of realizing his own mind-stream, completely wishes that all the suffering of others be completely extinguished, that person is the supreme." Furthermore, regarding the great benefit, Master Chandragomin also said: "Having obtained it, one can dry up the great ocean of samsara, and sow the seeds of supreme enlightenment, the human body, which is more virtuous than a wish-fulfilling jewel, who would make it fruitless? Obtained by a person with great mental strength."
