By mere touch, one is awakened from the taintless samadhi. Then, showing the form of the body, he speaks thus: "Monks, you have not accomplished your task by this much. You have not accomplished the practice. Your nirvana is not a true nirvana. Monks, now draw near to the Tathagata, look, and realize!" Thus he exhorts them. In the Lotus Sutra, it is also said in verses: "Monks, today, for this reason, I say this: by this much alone, one does not attain nirvana. For the sake of the wisdom of all-knowing, generate great and excellent diligence. Thus, one will attain the wisdom of all-knowing." Thus he speaks. Having exhorted them in this way, the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas then generate the great Bodhicitta, and after practicing the conduct of Bodhisattvas for immeasurable kalpas, they attain Buddhahood. In the Lankavatara Sutra, it is also taught in the same way. In the Lotus Sutra, it is also said: "These Shravakas have not entered nirvana; having diligently practiced the conduct of Bodhisattvas, all these Shravakas will become Buddhas." What is the Mahayana lineage like? In summary: Classification, essence, names, and, the difference from others, cause, and, aspect, sign, and meaning, these six points, summarize the Mahayana lineage. That is to say, there are two classifications of lineage: the naturally abiding lineage, and the lineage that is truly accomplished. Explaining the essence of each of these lineages: First, the naturally abiding lineage is: the power to generate the Dharma of the Buddhas, having beginningless time, obtained by the nature of Dharma. The lineage that is truly accomplished is: the power to generate the Dharma of the Buddhas, obtained from previously habituating roots of virtue. Thus, both types have the potential for Buddhahood.
