The suchness of the earth and the suchness of sentient beings have no distinction of good or bad, big or small, high or low. Therefore, sentient beings possess the essence of the Buddha. The statement that all sentient beings have a lineage means that sentient beings abide in five types of Buddha-lineage. What are they? In summary: the lineage of the cut-off, the uncertain lineage, the Śrāvaka lineage, the Pratyekabuddha lineage, and the Great Vehicle lineage. These five encompass the Buddha-lineage. The lineage of the cut-off refers to those who are shameless, without embarrassment, without compassion, and so on, possessing six characteristics. The great teacher Asaṅga also stated this. As it is said: Even seeing the faults of saṃsāra, there is not the slightest weariness; Even hearing the qualities of the Buddha, there is not the slightest faith; Shameless, without embarrassment, and without the slightest compassion; Increasingly engaging in sinful deeds, without the slightest regret; Possessing these six "nones," there is no share of Buddhahood. The Ornament of the Sūtras also says: Some are certain to engage in evil deeds; Some completely destroy all white dharmas; Some have no virtuous roots in accordance with liberation; Some lack white qualities and are separated from causes. In general, those who possess these signs are said to be of the cut-off lineage, which refers to lingering in saṃsāra for a long time. However, it is not that they can never attain enlightenment; if they make effort, they can also attain enlightenment. As it is said in the White Lotus of Compassion Sūtra: O Kaundinya, if a sentient being who has no share of nirvāṇa, even if they focus on the Buddha and scatter even one flower into the sky, they will have the fruit of nirvāṇa. I say that they will reach immeasurable nirvāṇa and the end of nirvāṇa. The uncertain lineage refers to those who depend on conditions. Those who rely on a virtuous friend of the Śrāvakas, or associate with Śrāvaka friends, or see Śrāvaka sūtras, thereby developing faith in the Śrāvakas, transforming into the Śrāvaka lineage, and ultimately manifesting as Śrāvakas. Similarly, if they encounter the conditions of Pratyekabuddhas or the Great Vehicle, they will transform into Pratyekabuddhas or the Great Vehicle. The Śrāvaka lineage refers to those who are afraid of saṃsāra and desire

Having faith in the Shravaka path, are those with little compassion. As it is said: "Fearing upon seeing the suffering of samsara, greatly longing for nirvana, not delighting in the benefit of sentient beings, possessing these three characteristics is the Shravaka lineage." Thus it is said. The Pratyekabuddha lineage is, those who, on top of those three characteristics, also possess great pride, a secret teacher, and delight in being alone in solitude. As it is said: "Weary of existence and delighting in nirvana, with little compassion and especially great pride, a secret teacher and delighting in being alone, the wise should know this as the Pratyekabuddha lineage." Thus it is said. These two lineages of Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas, having entered these two vehicles, even if they obtain their respective fruits, it is not actual nirvana. So, how do they abide at that time? Relying on the ground of the imprints of ignorance, they abide having taken a mind-made body by means of uncontaminated karma. However, at that time there is uncontaminated samadhi, therefore, they abide with the perception that it is nirvana. So, if it is not actual nirvana, is it not reasonable that the Bhagavan would teach these two paths? It is reasonable. For example, when merchants from Jambudvipa go to the outer ocean to obtain precious jewels, in the meantime they become tired and exhausted in a large, desolate forest, thinking that they will not obtain the jewels, for those who are about to return, the great leader, by means of his miraculous power, conjures a great city there to let them rest. Sentient beings, because of their timidity, are frightened upon hearing the wisdom of the Buddha, thinking that this endeavor of attaining Buddhahood is too difficult, and that they cannot do it, for those who do not enter or are about to return, he teaches these two paths of Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas, and lets them rest in the state of Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas. In the White Lotus Sutra, it is also said: "Likewise, all Shravakas also, have the perception of having attained nirvana, for those spoken of by the Victorious Ones, not having attained nirvana is just rest." Thus it is said. After these sentient beings have rested in the state of Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas, the Tathagata knows, and then urges them to accomplish Buddhahood. And how does he urge them? He urges them with body, speech, and mind, by the mind emitting rays of light, touching those mind-made bodies of the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas.
