That is what Maitreya elaborately explained in the Sutra of the Arrayed Tree in the Avatamsaka Sutra. It is said that the benefits of generating the mind of enlightenment are explained in that sutra through about two hundred and thirty examples. It is said that all of these are condensed into four great doors of benefits. Furthermore, 'Son of good family, the mind of enlightenment is like the seed of all the Buddha's teachings.' 'It eliminates all poverty, like the son of Vaishravana.' These and so on are the benefits of arising for one's own benefit. 'Because it completely protects all beings, it is like a dwelling.' 'Because all beings rely on it, it is like a support.' These and so on are the benefits of arising for the benefit of others. 'Because it overcomes the enemy of afflictions, it is like a spear.' 'Because it completely cuts down the tree of suffering, it is like an axe.' These and so on are the benefits of cutting off all unfavorable sides. 'Because it completely fulfills all thoughts, it is like a good vase.' 'Because it completely accomplishes all desires, it is like a wish-fulfilling jewel.' These and so on are the benefits of accomplishing all favorable sides. By remembering all such benefits, one will greatly value and cherish that beneficial mind of enlightenment. Having become like that, one will practice and protect that mind without letting it degenerate. Therefore, one should always remember these benefits, and even within a session, one should remember them once. The third is called learning to accumulate the two accumulations. If the means of generating the power of the mind of enlightenment are explained, as it is also said in the Lamp for the Path to Enlightenment: 'The nature of merit and wisdom, is the cause of complete accumulation.' These and so on are said. That is, the accumulation of merit is these aspects of skillful means such as the ten practices of Dharma and the four ways of gathering disciples, and the accumulation of wisdom is these aspects of wisdom such as 'those three circles are completely pure.' Thus, by accumulating the two accumulations, the power of the mind of enlightenment arises in one's own mindstream. Therefore, one should always accumulate the two accumulations, and even reciting a short mantra can be counted as the measure of the two accumulations, so within a session

One should also accumulate at least once at any time. It is also said in the Compendium Sutra: 'Today, what kind of merit and wisdom accumulation should I do? What should I do that benefits sentient beings?' A Bodhisattva should always think like this.' This is said. Fourth, the practice of repeatedly training the mind of enlightenment is called learning. If the method of increasing the mind of enlightenment is explained, it is also said in the Lamp for the Path to Enlightenment: 'Having generated the pure mind of aspiration for enlightenment, one should make it grow everywhere with much effort.' This is said. That is, one should know the three: training the mind that is the cause of enlightenment, training the actual mind of enlightenment, and training the mind of the conduct of enlightenment. By training these three, the mind of enlightenment will increase. Among them, the first is to constantly think of love and compassion for sentient beings, or at least think of it once in each session. Training the actual mind of enlightenment is to think three times during the day and three times during the night with the mind that desires to attain Buddhahood for the sake of sentient beings, or to perform the extensive ceremony of generating the mind of enlightenment, or even within each session, to recite what is said in the ceremony of generating the mind of enlightenment composed by Jowo: 'To the Buddhas, Dharma, and Supreme Assembly, until enlightenment I take refuge. By these deeds of generosity and so on, may I attain Buddhahood for the benefit of beings.' There are two types of training the mind of the conduct of enlightenment: training the mind of benefiting others and training the mind of purifying one's own continuum. Among them, the first is to generate the mind of dedicating and giving away one's body, possessions, and all the virtues of the three times for the benefit and happiness of others. Training the mind of purifying one's own continuum is to constantly guard the precepts and to be fearful of sins and afflictions. Fifth, the practice of abandoning the four black dharmas and relying on the four white dharmas is called learning. If the method of not forgetting the mind of enlightenment is explained, it is also said in the Lamp for the Path to Enlightenment: 'In order to remember in future lives as well, one should protect the trainings that have been spoken of.' This is said. If it is explained from where to learn, it is said in the Maitreya Question Sutra, those four black dharmas are, as it is said: 'Maitreya, if a Bodhisattva possesses four dharmas, he will turn away from the mind of enlightenment.'
