Because the suffering of the evil destinies is like an ocean that cannot be crossed. "To liberate" means to place them on the path of higher rebirth and liberate them from the suffering of the evil destinies, thereby attaining the state of gods and humans. "Those who are not liberated" refers to the beings of gods and humans, because they have not been liberated from the bondage of afflictions like iron chains. "To liberate" means to place them on the path of definite goodness and liberate them from the bondage of afflictions, thereby attaining the state of liberation. "Those who have not breathed" refers to the Hearers and Solitary Buddhas, because they have not breathed in the Great Vehicle. "To make them breathe" means that after they have generated the supreme Bodhicitta, they breathe in the view and conduct of the Great Vehicle, thereby attaining the state of the ten Bhumis. "Those who have not completely passed into Nirvana" refers to the Bodhisattvas, because they have not attained the non-abiding Nirvana. "Completely passing into Nirvana" means to place them sequentially on the grounds and paths, thereby completely passing into Nirvana, that is, attaining the state of Buddhahood. "Afterwards" means vowing to become a Buddha in order to accomplish these necessary things. "Afterwards" refers to cultivating the joy and great delight of the thought of accomplishing great things. The precepts are also declared. Thus, one who generates this mind is called a Bodhisattva, that is, one who desires Bodhi for the sake of sentient beings, and who, having attained Bodhi, desires to liberate sentient beings, taking Bodhi and sentient beings as objects, and seeing them as brave and endowed with diligence for their benefit. The ritual of generating the aspiration Bodhicitta has been explained. There are also three ways to take the vows of entering the path: the preliminary, the actual, and the subsequent. The first has ten: Making requests, asking about common obstacles, stating the weight of transgressions, the faults of lapses, the benefits of taking vows, accumulating merit, asking about uncommon obstacles, urging, generating special intention, and briefly stating what is to be learned. The actual practice is: the disciple generates the mind to take the vows, and the teacher says: Son of good family, you who are called by this name.

I, the Bodhisattva named so-and-so, regarding the trainings and precepts of all past Bodhisattvas, the trainings and precepts of all future Bodhisattvas, and the trainings and precepts of all Bodhisattvas residing in the ten directions of the world now, all the trainings and precepts of the Bodhisattvas, what all past Bodhisattvas have learned, what all future Bodhisattvas will learn, all the trainings of all Bodhisattvas residing in all the ten directions of the world now, and all the precepts of the Bodhisattvas, namely, the Pratimoksha precepts, the precepts of gathering virtuous dharmas, and the precepts of benefiting sentient beings, do you wish to take them? Ask this three times, and the disciple answers: I do. Answer this three times as well. Afterwards, there are six dharmas: requesting to know, the benefit of introducing wisdom to observe, not proclaiming the precepts in a mixed manner, learning and understanding the trainings in brief, offering in remembrance of kindness, and dedicating the root of virtue. The taking of the Engaging Bodhisattva Vows has been explained. These are what is said according to the tradition of Lord Atisha. The benefits of generating Bodhicitta are two: countable and uncountable. The first is divided into two: the benefits of generating aspirational Bodhicitta and the benefits of generating engaging Bodhicitta. The first has eight benefits: one will enter the Great Vehicle, one will become the basis for all the trainings of a Bodhisattva, one will cut off all sins from the root, one will establish the root of unsurpassed Bodhi, one will obtain immeasurable merit, one will please all Buddhas, one will benefit all sentient beings, and one will quickly realize perfect and complete enlightenment. Among these, first explaining the first: If one has not generated the supreme Bodhicitta, even if one possesses perfect conduct, one will not be included in the Great Vehicle; and if one is not included in the Great Vehicle, one will not attain perfect and complete enlightenment.
