Likewise, I, named so-and-so, request the master to generate the unsurpassed, perfectly complete, great Bodhi mind for me. Say this three times. Second is accumulating merit. First, prostrate to the Lama and the Three Jewels. Then, offer the actually arranged offerings, and mentally emanated offerings according to one's means. Among these, the novice vows are obtained from the Khenpo and Acharya, the Bhikshu vows are obtained from the Sangha, and the two types of Bodhicitta are said to be obtained from accumulating merit. Therefore, if one has great wealth, one should not offer meager material things, but must give generously. In the past, wealthy Bodhisattvas also gave generously, even offering millions of temples before generating Bodhicitta. As it is said in the Sutra of the Fortunate Aeon: When the Tathagata was named Giving Fame, as the king of Jambudvipa, he offered a million temples to the Tathagata Moon Crest, and first generated the mind towards Bodhi. Or, if one's wealth is small, it is sufficient to offer a small amount of material things. In the past, poor Bodhisattvas also gave a small amount of things, such as offering a lamp made of a single blade of grass and then generating Bodhicitta. As it is said: When the Tathagata Light Radiance resided in the city, he offered a lamp of grass to the Tathagata Infinite Light, and first generated the mind towards Bodhi. Or, if one has no wealth, there is no need to be discouraged, it is sufficient to merely prostrate three times. In the past, poor Bodhisattvas also generated Bodhicitta after joining their palms three times. As it is said: The Tathagata endowed with a garland of qualities, before the Tathagata's actions, joined his palms three times in prostration, and first generated the mind towards Bodhi. Third is the special refuge, which is done here as described above. In the main part, the master should instruct the disciple as follows: In general, how far does the realm of space extend? It is pervaded by sentient beings.

Oh! Sentient beings are pervaded by what? They are pervaded by afflictions. Afflictions are pervaded by what? They are pervaded by negative karma. Negative karma is pervaded by what? It is pervaded by suffering. All those suffering sentient beings are solely my parents. All parents are only kind. Therefore, these kind parents of mine are sinking in the great ocean of samsara, tormented by immeasurable suffering, without protectors, utterly pitiable, utterly confused. How wonderful it would be if they could encounter happiness! How wonderful it would be if they could be free from suffering! Generate such loving-kindness and compassion in your mind. Then, again, thinking, 'Since I cannot do anything for them now, in order to be able to do something for them, I must attain the state of a perfectly complete Buddha, who has exhausted all faults, perfected all qualities, and is capable of benefiting all beings. I must attain that.' Think thus in your mind. Then, the disciple follows the teacher and says this: 'May all the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas abiding in the ten directions heed me! Teacher, please heed me! I, named XXX, with whatever roots of virtue arising from generosity, discipline, and meditation done in this life and other lives, and whatever I have done, caused to be done, and rejoiced in, just as the Tathagatas, Arhats, perfectly complete Buddhas, the Bhagavat, of the past, and the Bodhisattva Mahasattvas who abide on the great earth, initially generated the unsurpassed, perfectly complete, great Bodhicitta, so too, I, named XXX, from this time onwards, until I reach the essence of enlightenment, in order to liberate those sentient beings who have not been liberated, to free those who have not been freed, to comfort those who have not been comforted, and to lead those who have not entered Nirvana into Nirvana, I generate the unsurpassed, perfectly complete, great Bodhicitta.' By reciting this three times, one takes the vow. That which says, 'those sentient beings who have not been liberated,' refers to those in the hell realms…
