For the sake of unreal things, various kinds of sins are committed. Things that can be grasped will also disappear, and things that cannot be grasped will also disappear. I will also disappear. Thus, everything will disappear. So it is said. Therefore, sins are committed for the sake of enemies and friends, and for the sake of body and possessions. Since these four cannot accompany me forever, one should think that sin itself is costly and of little significance, and thus generate strong remorse. If one thinks that even if it is meaningless, sin will not harm me, then one should consider the fear brought about by the consequences of sin, and thus generate remorse. That is to say, the fear brought about by committing sins is threefold: fear at the time of death, fear at the time of dying, and fear after death. The first is that evil-doers, even at the time of death, will experience unbearable suffering such as amputation. As it is said: Although I am lying on the bed, surrounded by relatives and friends, the feeling of being killed is only experienced by me alone. So it is said. Next is the fear of the consequences at the time of death: Yama's messengers, fierce black men holding ropes, bind from the neck and escort to the place of hell; those holding clubs, Shanglang and other weapons, whip from behind, bringing many harms. It is also said: When Yama's messengers seize you, what is the use of relatives and friends? At that time, if there is merit that can be used for protection, but I have not relied on it. So it is said. It is also said in the Siksamuccaya: The rope of time is tied from the neck, and the people of Yama, the fierce ones, strike with clubs and escort away. So it is said. If one thinks that I am not afraid of Yama's messengers, then, as it is said: In the place of dismemberment, today being escorted or terrified, with dry mouth and astringent eyes, etc., showing a different appearance from the past. Yama's messengers seize you with a terrifying image, and are also attacked by great diseases, extremely pitiful, needless to say. So it is said. The fear brought about by the consequences of sin after death is: falling into the great hell, experiencing unbearable suffering such as boiling and burning. Therefore, very

Therefore, be afraid. As it is said: Seeing, hearing, remembering, reading, and depicting pictures of hell will cause fear to arise. What need is there to mention those who experience unbearable ripening results? Therefore, the result of sin is very frightening, and one should generate regret. Third, if you think that sin can be confessed later, that is wrong, you must confess quickly. Why? Because before the sin is purified, I may die. As it is said: If I am not purified of sin, I may die before this. How can I be sure to be liberated from this? Pray for refuge with swiftness. If you think that I will not die before the sin is purified, then the demon of death will not care whether my sin is purified or not, and will take my life whenever he finds an opportunity, so it is impossible to be sure when I will die. As it is said: This unreliable Lord of Death does not wait for what has been done or not done. Whether sick or not, no one can rely on life suddenly. Therefore, life is unreliable. Before sin is purified, there is a possibility of death at any time, so it must be purified quickly. Therefore, the problem lies here, so you should feel regret. Therefore, through these three reasons, regret arises for sin, and confession is made openly in special places and in front of the public. In this way, the power of practicing refutation purifies sins, just like when someone who owes high-interest debt is unable to repay it and can only beg the creditor. Previously, there was a person named Angulimala, who killed nine hundred and ninety-nine people and committed monstrous crimes. However, by practicing the power of refuting sins, he eventually purified his sins and attained the fruit of an Arhat. As it is said: Those who were once careless, but later become cautious, are as beautiful as the moon without clouds, like Joy, Angulimala, the Seeing One, and the Happy Walker. The power of the antidote is to practice virtue to counteract sin. It can exhaust defilements. In the Abhidharmasamuccaya it is also said: The karma of dissimilar qualities, with the power of the antidote karma.
