Because the Pratimoksha vows do not arise, while the Bodhisattva vows are said to arise. It is also unreasonable as a basis for abiding, because the Pratimoksha vows are abandoned upon death and transference, while the Bodhisattva vows are not abandoned. If you say so, the answer is: There are three kinds of differences in intention for the Pratimoksha vows. If these seven groups are taken with the intention of desiring the happiness of the three realms, they are called the precepts of wishing for goodness. If they are taken with the intention of wanting to permanently abandon one's own suffering, they are called the precepts of definite renunciation of the Hearers. If they are taken with the intention of wanting to attain great Bodhi, they are called the precepts of the Bodhisattva vows. Among them, the former two, because they do not arise in eunuchs, hermaphrodites, gods, etc., and because they are abandoned after death and transference, and because they cannot be restored if damaged, they are not the basis of the Bodhisattva vows. But the precepts of the Bodhisattva vows are also present in eunuchs, hermaphrodites, gods, etc., and they are not abandoned even after death and transference, and they can be restored if damaged, so they are both the basis of arising and the basis of abiding. Therefore, in the commentary on the Ornament of the Sutras, it is also said: "What is the basis of the mind? The vows of the Bodhisattva's precepts are the basis." Or, it is necessary as the basis of arising, but it is not necessarily the basis of abiding. For example, the uncontaminated vows, as the basis of arising, require the vows of meditation, but they are not necessarily the basis of abiding. So it is said. The Bodhisattva's Pratimoksha vows also do not require a separate ordination ritual. If the Hearer's precepts that were previously taken are later taken over by a special intention, they will be transformed into the Bodhisattva vows, because the inferior mind is abandoned, but the mind of abandonment is not abandoned. Thus, possessing the lineage of the Great Vehicle, taking refuge in the Three Jewels, possessing any one of the seven groups of Pratimoksha vows, then one is the basis of the person who generates the mind of Bodhicitta. From the Ornament of Precious Liberation, the Wish-Fulfilling Jewel of the Holy Dharma, the eighth chapter, the chapter on going for refuge and taking vows.

The very nature of generating the mind of enlightenment is: desiring perfect and complete enlightenment for the sake of others. As it is said in the Ornament of Realization: The generation of the mind is for the sake of others, desiring perfect and complete enlightenment. Thus it is said. There are three divisions of generating the supreme mind of enlightenment: division from the perspective of examples, division from the perspective of stages, and division from the perspective of characteristics. The first of these is: showing the divisions of the mind of enlightenment from ordinary beings to the ground of the Buddhas by means of examples. The noble Maitreya said as follows. As it is said in the Ornament of Realization: That is earth, gold, moon and fire, treasure and jewel source and ocean, vajra, mountain, medicine, friend, wish-fulfilling jewel, sun and song, king, treasury and great path, vehicle, adorned water and river, clouds, are twenty-two in number. Thus it is said. These twenty-two examples are from intention to dharmakaya. If they are connected with the five paths, having intention is like earth, it is the basis of all white dharmas. Having thought is like gold, it will not change until enlightenment. Having higher thought is like a waxing moon, all virtuous dharmas will increase. These three are included in the first practitioner's ground of the small, medium and large stages of the accumulation path. Having application is like fire, burning the firewood that obscures the three omnisciences. This is included in the path of application. Having generosity paramita is like a great treasure, satisfying all sentient beings. Having discipline is like a source of jewels, it is the basis of the qualities of jewels. Having patience is like a great ocean, not being disturbed by all unpleasant things falling upon it. Having diligence is like a vajra, being strong because of its indestructible nature. Having meditation is like a mountain king, not moving from the distraction of the object. Having wisdom is like medicine, afflictions and knowable obscurations.

It pacifies abdominal diseases. Possessing skillful means is like a virtuous friend, never abandoning the benefit of sentient beings in all circumstances. Possessing aspiration is like a wish-fulfilling jewel, accomplishing the desired result as wished. Possessing power is like the sun, fully ripening those to be tamed. Prajñāpāramitā is like the sound of Dharma, teaching the Dharma that makes those to be tamed desire it. These ten encompass the ten bhūmis, starting with Joyful, in order, and are the objects of practice on the paths of seeing and meditation. Possessing clairvoyance is like a great king, accomplishing the benefit of others with unobstructed power. Possessing merit and wisdom is like a treasury, becoming a storehouse of many accumulations. Possessing dharmas in accordance with the aspects of enlightenment is like a great road, traveled and followed by all noble ones. Possessing compassion and insight is like a vehicle, easily going without abandoning anywhere in saṃsāra or nirvāṇa. Possessing retention and confidence is like inexhaustible water, not being depleted by holding the dharmas that have been heard and not heard. These five are encompassed by the special path of a bodhisattva. Possessing a garden of Dharma is like hearing pleasant music, sweetly proclaiming to those to be tamed who desire liberation. Possessing the path of one going is like the flow of a river, not diminishing the activity of accomplishing the benefit of others. Possessing the Dharmakāya is like a cloud, from the gate of showing dwelling in Tuṣita and so on, the activities for the benefit of sentient beings depend on it. These three are encompassed by the Buddha-bhūmi, thus the twenty-two are encompassed from the first bhūmi to the Buddha-bhūmi. From the boundary of the bhūmis, there are four divisions: the arising of mind with faith and understanding, the arising of mind with higher intention, the arising of mind of ripening, and the arising of mind of abandoning obscurations. The first of these is that which is encompassed by the bhūmi of acting with faith and understanding. The second is from the first to the seventh bhūmi.
