It protects from all downfalls. Regarding the precepts, there are three general precepts, three specific precepts, and three corresponding precepts, making a total of nine. The first of these is: one should always diligently make offerings to the Three Jewels, even offering the choicest part of whatever one eats, and one should not abandon the Three Jewels for the sake of one's life or rewards, and one should repeatedly take refuge by remembering the qualities of the Three Jewels. Regarding the three specific precepts: Having taken refuge in the Buddha, one does not take refuge in other gods. As stated in the Great Nirvana Sutra: Those who have taken refuge in the Buddhas are true lay practitioners, and will never turn to other gods for protection. Thus it is said. Having taken refuge in the Dharma, one does not harm sentient beings in any way. As stated in the Sutra: Having taken refuge in the sacred Dharma, one is free from the mind of harming and injuring. Thus it is said. Having taken refuge in the Sangha, one does not rely on non-Buddhists. As stated in the Sutra: Having taken refuge in the Sangha, one does not turn to non-Buddhists. Thus it is said. Regarding the three corresponding precepts: One should respect the support of the Buddha Jewel, the body image of the Tathagata, even fragments of tsha-tshas; one should respect the support of the Dharma Jewel, the texts and books of the sacred Dharma, even a single letter within them; and one should respect the support of the Sangha Jewel, the attire of the teacher, even a yellow patch that has been sewn on. There are eight benefits of taking refuge: one enters the ranks of Buddhists; one becomes the basis for all vows; all previously committed sins are exhausted; one is not obstructed by human and non-human beings; all desired things are accomplished; one possesses a great accumulation of merit; one does not fall into the lower realms; and one quickly attains perfect and complete enlightenment. The third meaning, the Pratimoksha vows: materially, there are four; based on the support, there are eight. Here, one takes any one of the seven classes except for the Upavasatha. The seven classes of Pratimoksha are: Bhikshu and Bhikshuni, Shikshamana, Shramanera and Shramanerika, five in total, and Upasaka

That is, two types of bhikshunis and bhikshuni candidates, plus two types of laymen and laywomen, totaling seven types. As stated in the Bodhisattva-bhumi, these seven types of Pratimoksha vows are the precepts of bhikshus, bhikshunis, shramanerikas, shramanas, shramaneris, upasakas, and upasikas. Whether they are ordained or lay practitioners, they should be understood accordingly. It is said. So, why is it necessary to have the Pratimoksha vows for the purpose of entering into the generation of bodhicitta? It should be understood that it is necessary as a basis through the three reasons of analogy, scriptural authority, and reasoning. Firstly, for example, the place where the great Chakravartin king is invited and resides is not a place filled with impurities such as feces and garbage, but a well-cleaned and beautiful palace, adorned with various ornaments such as jewels, which is a pleasant place. Similarly, the place where the king of bodhicitta is generated and resides is not in a continuum that does not restrain the three doors of body, speech, and mind from non-virtue, nor is it stained by sin, but in a body where the three doors of body, speech, and mind are free from sin and adorned with the precepts of discipline. As for scriptural authority, the chapter on the generation of bodhicitta in the Ornament of the Sutras says: 'Discipline is the vast basis.' That is to say, the precepts of the fasting vows are precepts limited to one day, so the scope is small. But these seven types of precepts are not like that, so they are vast precepts. Therefore, the seven types of precepts are said to be the basis for the generation of bodhicitta. The Lamp for the Path to Enlightenment also says: 'Those who have the seven types of Pratimoksha vows and always possess other vows have the qualification for the Bodhisattva vows, otherwise they do not.' That is to say, any one of the seven types of Pratimoksha is said to be the basis. As for reasoning, the Pratimoksha vows are to abandon the four types of harm to others, while the Bodhisattva vows are to benefit others. If one does not turn away from harm, there is no way to benefit others. If others say that the Pratimoksha vows are not suitable as the basis for the generation of the Bodhisattva vows because there are eunuchs, hermaphrodites, and gods, etc.
