None. The inner obstacles are that even if others cannot prevent it, one cannot eat or drink. As it is said: Some have mouths as small as the eye of a needle, but their stomachs are as large as mountains, with the danger of hunger. Even a little bit of impure matter, they do not have the power to seek. So it is said. There are also two kinds of obstacles to food and drink: those with necklaces of flames and those who eat garbage. The first of these is that they will burn as soon as they eat and drink. The second is that later they will drink feces and urine, and cut and eat their own flesh. That is also like seeing wheat growing ears in a desolate place, seeing countless grains of sand. How long can pretas live? One month of humans is one day and night for pretas, and calculated in months and years, they can live for five hundred years. Likewise, pretas, five hundred months and days. So it is said. Animals are divided into: many-legged, four-legged, two-legged, and no-legged, four kinds. Where do these live? In water, plains, and the activity areas at the edge of forests. The root of that place is the great ocean. What suffering do they experience? The suffering of being exploited, the suffering of being killed, and the suffering of eating each other. The first of these is the animals that are enslaved by humans. As it is said: The powerless are exploited by being struck with feet and hands, whips and hooks. So it is said. The second is wild animals and so on. As it is said: Some die for the sake of pearls, wool, bones, blood, meat, and leather. So it is said. The third is mostly those who live in the outer ocean. As it is said: They eat whatever falls in front of them as food. So it is said. How long can animals live? There is no certainty, but at most they can live for one intermediate kalpa each. Likewise, animals, the longest is a kalpa. So it is said. The suffering of the lower realms has been explained. The suffering of the higher realms is threefold: the suffering of humans, the suffering of asuras, and the suffering of gods. Among them, humans have eight sufferings. As it is said: In the Sutra of Entering the Womb, those four

Moreover, birth is also suffering. Aging is also suffering. Sickness is also suffering. Death is also suffering. Separation from what is loved is also suffering. Encountering what is disliked is also suffering. Not finding what one desires after searching is also suffering. It is also suffering that what one has is difficult to protect. Thus it is said. Among these, birth is the root of all others. Although it is said that one is born from the four modes of birth, most are born from the womb. In this regard, first, even when entering the womb from the bardo existence, there is such suffering: the bardo existence possesses all miraculous powers, can travel in the sky, and like a divine eye, can see distant places of birth. Due to the power of karma, four inverted appearances arise, such as a great wind rising, heavy rain falling, the sky darkening, and the terrifying sound of many people's clamor. According to how good or bad the karma is, ten incorrect perceptions will arise, thinking that one is entering an immeasurable palace, or climbing on top of a building, or climbing onto a throne, or entering a grass hut, or entering a house of leaves, or burrowing into the grass, or entering a forest, or entering a hole in a wall, or burrowing into the straw. Thinking in this way, even from afar, one sees the parents engaging in intercourse and then goes there. Those who have accumulated great merit and occupy a high birth see an immeasurable palace and buildings, and run there. Those who have accumulated intermediate merit and occupy an intermediate birth see a grass hut and so on, and run there. Those who have not accumulated merit and occupy a bad birth see a hole in a wall and so on, and run there. Having arrived there, if one is to be born as a male, attachment to the mother arises, and hatred towards the father arises. If one is to be born as a female, attachment to the father arises, and hatred towards the mother arises. Due to attachment and hatred,
