Generally, taking this appropriated aggregate itself is suffering, on top of which are the manifestations of great suffering. These should be understood as two types: the suffering of the lower realms and the suffering of the higher realms. First, let's discuss the lower realms, which are the three: hell, hungry ghosts, and animals. Regarding these, one should understand them through four aspects: how many types each has, where they are located, what suffering they experience, and how long their lifespan is. Among these, hell can be divided into: eight hot hells, eight cold hells, totaling sixteen; plus the ephemeral hells and the neighboring hells, totaling eighteen. Where are these hot hells located? They are located below this Jambudvipa, because many go there from here. That is, below is the place where the beings of Avici Hell reside, and above it are the Extremely Hot Hell, the Hot Hell, the Great Crying Hell, the Crying Hell, the Crushing Hell, the Black Line Hell, and the Reviving Hell. As stated in the Abhidharmakosha: "Twenty thousand yojanas below this, Avici Hell is also the same. Above it are seven hells." What suffering do they experience? The reasons and commonalities will be explained. First, the Reviving Hell is where hell beings cut and stab each other, and after being killed, they are revived by the cold wind, and this continues until their lifespan is exhausted. The Black Line Hell is where black lines are drawn on the body, and then they are sawed apart with a burning saw or split open with a burning axe. As it is said: "Some are cut by saws, likewise others, are split by unbearable sharp axes." The Crushing Hell is where they are squeezed and crushed between mountains or between iron anvils. First, from two directions, two mountains like sheep's heads come and crush the beings. Then, the two mountains separate, and the cold wind blows, reviving the body as before, and then they are crushed again, and so on. As the Letter to a Friend says: "Equal to mountains, with long sheep horns, two terrifying ones, when they come together, the body is pulverized and completely destroyed." and so on. Being squeezed between millstones, streams of blood flow like four rivers. Even so, some are squeezed like sesame seeds, while others are ground into dust like fine powder. Thus it is said. Crying and wailing refer to the terrified screams of beings being burned. Great crying and wailing refer to even more piercing howls. Burning refers to being tormented by fire and the like, with boiling bitter water poured into the mouth, causing the internal organs to be scorched; or with a single-pointed, thorny spike piercing from the anus to the crown of the head. Extreme burning refers to particularly painful torment, with boiling bitter water and the like burning away the skinless parts, causing fire to emerge from the nine orifices; or with a three-pointed spike piercing from the anus and two soles of the feet to the crown of the head and two shoulders. Thus it is said. Likewise, others are filled with molten bitter water, the burning liquid congealing. Some are pierced through and through with thorny, blazing iron trees. Thus it is said. The beings in the Uninterrupted Hell are in an iron house ablaze with fire, the house being twenty thousand leagues in width and height, filled with countless leagues of iron and copper. Bitter water and copper water are poured inside, and they are tormented from all four directions by unbearable flames. Thus it is said. Some are placed in large iron cauldrons, cooked like porridge. Thus it is said. Because the suffering is uninterrupted, it is called Uninterrupted. How long do they live? The lifespans of the Reviving and other hells are equal to the days and nights of the desire realm gods. Therefore, their lifespans are like those of the desire realm gods. Thus it is said. The lifespan of the Four Great Kings is one day and night in the Reviving Hell, thirty days make a month, twelve months make a year, and the beings in the Reviving Hell live for five hundred years. In human years, this is 166,320,000,000 years. Similarly, the beings in the Thirty-three Heavens and the Black Rope Hell live for a thousand years, which in human years is 129,960,000,000 years. With the Strife-Free Heaven, the Combined Crushing Hell
