When I see such things, I think as before. When I hear of someone's death, when I hear "So-and-so has died" or "There is a corpse there," I think as before. When I remember someone's death in my mind, thinking of how many old and young people in my own country, town, and home who have associated with me have died, thinking of all that, before long, I think as before. As it is said in the sutra: "Tomorrow and the next life, which will come first is unpredictable, so do not strive for the affairs of tomorrow, but strive for the sake of the next life." It is said. The benefit of meditating on impermanence is: understanding that all conditioned phenomena are impermanent, thereby turning away from attachment to this life. Furthermore, it illuminates faith, helps diligence, quickly separates from attachment and aversion, and becomes a condition for realizing the equality of Dharma. From the Jewel Ornament of Liberation, the Wish-Fulfilling Jewel of the Holy Dharma, the fourth chapter, which explains the impermanence of conditioned phenomena, is finished. So what if impermanence dies? Will it not be reborn again? When reborn, will one not obtain the perfect enjoyment of gods and humans? Why am I not satisfied with that? This is attachment to the happiness of samsara. To counteract it, I will now explain the method of meditating on the faults of samsara. In summary: the suffering of conditioned phenomena, as well as the suffering of change, and the suffering of suffering, these three summarize the faults of samsara. That is to say, these three sufferings, if explained by way of example, the suffering of conditioned phenomena is like an unripe fruit. The suffering of change is like eating food mixed with poison. The suffering of suffering is like worms growing on the fruit. If these three sufferings are explained from the perspective of their own nature, the suffering of conditioned phenomena is neutral feeling. The suffering of change is pleasant feeling. The suffering of suffering is painful feeling. If these three sufferings are explained from the perspective of their characteristics, the suffering of conditioned phenomena is the suffering inherent in merely taking these aggregates of appropriation. That is, each

Ordinary people do not feel the suffering of formation. For example, when afflicted by a severe epidemic, they do not feel the minor ailments in the ears and other parts of the body. Those who have entered the stream, the noble ones, see the suffering of formation. For example, when the epidemic is almost cured, they feel the minor ailments in the ears and other parts of the body. Another example: a single hair on the palm of the hand does not cause discomfort or suffering, but if it enters the eye, it causes discomfort and suffering. Similarly, the suffering of formation exists in ordinary people, but they do not feel it as suffering, while the noble ones feel it as great suffering. As it says in the commentary on the Abhidharmakosha: A single hair lies on the palm of the hand; when it enters the eye, it causes discomfort and suffering. Children are like the palm of the hand, unable to perceive the hair of the suffering of formation. The noble ones are like the eye, seeing the suffering in formation. Second, the suffering of change refers to all the happiness in samsara eventually changing and becoming suffering, hence it is called the suffering of change. As it says in the Karunapundarika Sutra: The kingdom of the gods is the cause of suffering, and the kingdom of humans is also the cause of suffering. Therefore, even if one obtains the enjoyment of a Chakravartin king, it will eventually turn into suffering. As it says in the Suhrllekha: Even having become a Chakravartin king, in samsara one still becomes a slave. Moreover, even if one obtains the body and enjoyment of a deity like Indra, one will eventually die, transmigrate, and fall. As it is said: Even having become Indra, worthy of offerings, one falls back to earth due to the power of karma. Moreover, even if one is like the god Brahma, having become detached from desire and attachment, and having obtained the bliss of meditative absorption, one will eventually fall. As it is said: Even Brahma, having obtained the bliss of detachment from desire, will eventually become fuel for the fire of Avici hell; one should rely on that uninterrupted suffering. Third, the suffering of suffering
