Because it is fabricated, and because life is consumed by moments, one will surely die. Because there is no one who can remain without dying, one will surely die. As the scholar Aśvaghoṣa said: 'On earth or in heaven, is there anyone who, having been born, has not died? Have you ever seen, heard, or even doubted such a thing?' Therefore, even those sages with miraculous powers and immeasurable direct perception cannot find a place to escape or be liberated in the land of immortality; all will eventually die, let alone us. As it is said: 'The five great sages with direct perception, who can travel far in the sky, cannot go to that place where there is no death.' Moreover, even the noble Pratyekabuddhas and the great Śrāvaka Arhats ultimately abandon their bodies, let alone us. As it is said in the Chapter on

It does not stay for a single moment, just as it quickly goes to the place it is supposed to reach. Life also does not stay for a single moment, but quickly goes towards death. Thus, for example, a skilled person shoots an arrow after stringing it on a bow, it quickly reaches its target without stopping. The lives of people are also like that. It is said. Also, the second example is like water flowing from a steep cliff, it flows without stopping for a single moment. It is even more clear that human life cannot be stopped. As it is said in the Precious Heap Sutra: Friends, this life passes quickly, Like the rapid flow of water on a steep cliff, children do not understand, ignorant people are intoxicated by the arrogance of wealth. It is said. It is also said in the Collection Sutra: Like the flow of a great river, it goes without returning. It is said. The third example is like a prisoner being led to the execution ground, each step brings him closer to death, our lives are also like that. As it is said in the Noble Tree Sutra: Like a prisoner being led to the execution ground, each step brings him closer to death. It is said. It is also said in the Collection Sutra: For example, those who are destined to be executed, each step they take brings them closer to the execution ground, the lives of people are also like that. It is said. There are three reasons for dying in a way that cannot be determined when: because life is uncertain, because the body has no essence, and because there are many causes of death, so it is impossible to determine when one will die. The first reason is that the lives of other beings, or people of other continents, may be certain, but the lives of us Jambudvipa people are uncertain. As it is said in the Abhidharma Kosha: Here, the end is uncertain, the first ten years are immeasurable. It is said. How is it uncertain? It is said in the Collection Sutra: Some will die in the womb, some will die at birth, some will die while crawling, some will die while running, some will be old, some will be young, some will be in their prime, gradually going towards death. It is said. The body has no essence because this body has no solid essence other than the thirty-six impure substances. As it is said in the Bodhicharyavatara: First of all, this layer of skin,

Separate with wisdom, separate the flesh from the network of bones with the sword of wisdom, and after separating all the bones, one should observe the marrow, and personally observe what essence there is in it. Thus it is said. The causes of death are numerous, and for oneself and others, there is nothing that is not a cause of death. As it is said in the "Letter to a Friend": This life is full of harm, like a lamp in the wind, more impermanent than a bubble in water, breathing in and out, waking from sleep, it is rare indeed to awaken. Thus it is said. The three reasons why death will not disappear no matter what are: it will not disappear because of wealth and food, it will not disappear because of relatives and friends, and it will not disappear because of one's own body. Among them, not disappearing because of wealth and food is, as it is said in the "Entering the Bodhisattva's Way": Having obtained much wealth, and having enjoyed happiness for a long time, one goes away naked and empty-handed, just as if robbed by a thief. Thus it is said. In this way, not only will one not avoid death because of wealth and food, but it is harmful to both this life and the next. Among them, the harm to this life is: fighting for wealth and food, and the suffering of guarding against theft and slavery arises. The ripening of the next life will cause one to fall into the lower realms. Among them, not disappearing because of relatives and friends is, as it is said in the "Entering the Bodhisattva's Way": When death comes, sons will not become protectors, neither father nor mother nor relatives, you have no protector. Thus it is said. In this way, not only will one not avoid death because of relatives, but it is harmful to both this life and the next. Among them, the harm to this life is: fearing that they will die, and suffering greatly from the fear of failure, the ripening of the next life will cause one to fall into the lower realms. Not disappearing because of one's own body is: not disappearing because of the qualities of the body, and not disappearing because of the substance of the body itself. Among them, the first is: even if one is brave and strong, one cannot prevent death, even if one is agile and swift, one cannot escape death by fleeing, even if one is intelligent and eloquent, one cannot escape with eloquence, just as no one can prevent or seize the sun from setting behind the mountains. Not disappearing because of the substance of the body itself is, as it is said in the "Entering the Bodhisattva's Way": Having endured many hardships
