Alternatively, fix the mind by visualizing the essence of the guru as a sphere of light. If dullness occurs, visualize a white lotus with eight petals in the heart center, with a white dot the size of a pea in the center, extending from the heart to the crown of the head in the sky, and remain there. Avoid thick clothes and sources of heat such as the sun and fire. Do not consume nutritious food. Splash water on yourself. Avoid exposure to wind and cold breezes, and avoid looking at and staying on mountaintops. For agitation and distraction, visualize a black lotus facing downwards in the heart, and then visualize a black dot exiting through the urethra like a severed rope. Visualize the cushion dissolving into a golden ground, and then reverse the clothes and behavior from before, seeking warmth. Keep the awareness free from dullness and agitation in the present moment, or in a shady place, visualize a small dot or a small blue object, and focus on it. For these, first clearly generate the thought, "I will meditate on such dots, etc.," and strongly project it. Afterwards, it is best if it is clear. If it is not clear, just think in your mind, "There is such a thing," and without examining, remain naturally and without distraction on that itself. To increase clarity, limit the time, shorten each session, and increase the number of sessions. Thirteen sessions in total. Furthermore, the method of fixing the mind without support is as follows: Gradually, visualize earth, water, fire, wind, and space dissolving into each other, eventually becoming a vast emptiness. Then, open your eyes wide and gaze at the emptiness in the sky in front of you, focusing on it. Do not think of anything such as existence, non-existence, is, is not, etc., but relax, loosen, and let go, maintaining a vigilant awareness without distraction. Do not allow the mind to be distracted for even a moment, like threading a needle. Remain unmoving, like an ocean without waves. Remain without effort, like a garuda soaring through the sky. Remain without hope and fear, like a lion dwelling on a snowy mountain, so that you will not be distracted and no conceptual thoughts will arise. As soon as you are distracted, a conceptual thought will suddenly arise. As soon as it arises, recognize it immediately. Whether it is an unwholesome thought such as the three poisons of attachment, aversion, and ignorance, or a wholesome thought such as generosity, or an indeterminate thought, do not engage in any action such as negation, affirmation, rejection, acceptance, liking, or disliking, but simply recognize it and remain without distraction on that itself, observing with the eye of wisdom. Make that thought the support for fixing the mind.

Avoid the faults of being too tight and too loose, without falling to either side, maintain equanimity. Fourteen sessions. If that's still not enough, relying on the wind to control, there are vase breathing and relying on numbers to control, the first is: With the residual air of nine breaths, hold the last one tightly. Simultaneously with swallowing saliva, press down below the navel, holding as much as possible. When exhaling, coordinate with the exhalation, temporarily returning the lower air to its original position. After becoming proficient in this, slightly lift the lower air, practice vase breathing. Then also inhale slightly, focusing the mind on the emptiness four fingers wide below the navel. Occasionally look at the space between the eyebrows and then relax. Do not practice when too full or too hungry. Try to practice in the early morning. Similarly, if not accustomed, use numbers to control: Count the three aspects of air entering, staying, and exhaling as one unit, initially counting about twenty-one, or eventually counting to hundreds of thousands, etc., counting with awareness. Do not be distracted to anywhere other than the passage of the nostrils. By focusing on these different aspects of the object, one will surely grasp one of them. Because people's types are sudden, transcendent, and gradual, the ease or difficulty of manifestation varies for them, but do not be discouraged, persevere in practice, because there is no failure. Practicing with an experienced lama, the first abiding is like a waterfall on a steep mountain, the second is like a slowly flowing river, and the last is like a calm ocean, these three states will gradually manifest. In the previous states, it seems that gross conceptual thoughts arise, but one was not aware of them before. Now, because of maintaining calmness, one becomes aware, so do not be discouraged, persevere in practice, and eventually no conceptual thought can shake it, and it will naturally manifest. Like this, even if these three abidings have not arisen, generate diligence. By alternating between tight and loose meditation, they can arise. When tight, the body, mind, consciousness, views, etc., are all tightened, like walking on a single-plank bridge, this meditation has no object, just gently push it, and do it briefly. When relaxing, relax the posture, etc., let the mind naturally relax. Without fabrication, without self, relax casually. Letting go of effort and practice, like a child, relax and let go.
