Now, whatever the case, firstly, is the body, which is subject to birth and death, and the mind, which is free from birth and death and is permanent, one or separate? If the body and mind need to be recognized separately, then what is it that experiences feelings when the mind does not reside here and the body pervades without beginning or end? The body and mind are the supported and the supporter, with the body outside and the mind inside, like clothes on a person. If you think that feelings are experienced by the body alone, then the tongue should also be able to feel. If the mind feels and the two are separate, then the mind cannot be killed or cut. If a thorn pricks the body and the mind feels it, isn't it like clothes being burned by fire, where the supported is burned and the supporter should also be burned? Therefore, you must look carefully and make a decision. At this time, all arising feelings should be regarded as water and waves, and placed in the mind, and from that, the true state should be determined. These are the three ways of looking at it. Furthermore, observe the original state of the mind, which is clear, empty, and pure. Then, let a thought arise and change, and observe its essence. Observe whether the essence of stillness and movement are one or separate. If, after observing in this way, you see them as separate, then what is the state of separateness like? Are stillness and movement like a stretched rope, wound together with equal force, appearing in turn? Is stillness like the earth, and movement like a tree growing? Or, like a snake or a twisted rope, if one exists, the other will not appear, so that when there is stillness, there is no movement, and when there is movement, there is no stillness? Moreover, movement never stops and produces all kinds of changes. Stillness remains without movement, so the difference between the two is very great. If you think they are different in essence, then are there differences in color, shape, etc.? Or in the three stages of birth, dwelling, and cessation, or in the past, future, and present, or in permanence and impermanence? You should also observe. Furthermore, if you recognize that thoughts are helpful for practice, then the essence of stillness and movement are one. The way they appear is in turn, and there is no mover when there is stillness, nor a stayer when there is movement. Like water and waves, it is just the movement or action of the mind. If you realize that what exists solely is that both stillness and movement do not go beyond the naked state of clarity and emptiness, then you have gained some understanding. However, when you bring thoughts back and place them in practice, are you dwelling in clarity and emptiness, or are you dwelling in clarity and emptiness after the thoughts have disappeared, or are the thoughts just

Ah, that itself exists in clear emptiness. If it seems like the first two cases, then one should still pray intensely to the lama and strive to look again, and then one will surely see. Having done these face-to-face viewings, for the category of sudden breakthrough, first is insight, then calm abiding, and when both are absent, both arise. Arising all at once is due to the power of previous practice, where calm abiding and insight arise simultaneously through mere indication. Arising gradually is arising gradually, so here it is considered from the perspective of the latter. One should indicate according to the way it appears, and the view should also have a clear aspect and no grasping aspect, abiding like a small child looking at a room, and in that state, strive to look with great diligence, abandoning laziness. There is a need for renunciation, no need for renunciation, having faith and devotion, unwavering mindfulness, stable, in an unfabricated state, practicing without being bound by any hope or fear, not falling into profound superficiality, only pursuing the next life, and if one strives to look at these minds, one will surely quickly generate the wisdom of insight, and it is impossible not to arise with just this much. Like that, having determined the two situations of abiding and moving, this is the fourth. Thus, by cultivating the face-to-face viewing and the mind's pith instructions in that way, for the most part, there is no need for introduction, and it will spontaneously arise from within. Some arise but do not recognize it. Some understand, or just hear, or want to quickly generate good realization, and even if it has not arisen, they can speak and listen to the Dharma without confusing the words. The lama also needs to discern this. The student also needs to focus on the key points and practice, and the first way to introduce when looking at the essence is: like before, observe the essence of the abiding mind, and in that way, the essence of abiding is also clear, distinct, naked, not merely empty, and in the state of abiding, there is a non-conceptual awareness, clear, bright, open, relaxed, like color, shape, and so on. There is no need to say in words that it is like this and that, and in the absence of conceptualization, the clear and unceasing awareness, awake, bright, naked, open, distinct, something that has not been seen, something that has not been experienced, something that is not known, like this, there is no need to think that one has something, something will appear to oneself, and there is no need to emphasize that it is like this, from the depths of one's heart, it is determined, clear and empty, without conceptualization, clear and bright.
