Do not close your eyes completely, direct your gaze to the tip of your nose, and moderate your physical movements, speech, and expressions. Gradually cut off conceptual thoughts and familiarize yourself with shamatha-vipashyana; this is the third point. Furthermore, to eliminate faults such as dullness and agitation, visualize a bright, lustrous, oily, and extremely clear bindu the size of a mustard seed between your eyebrows, and focus your mind on it. Sometimes, during meditation, focus on a black, oily bindu the size of a mustard seed. If you become dull, direct your awareness to the white bindu and look at the sky. Subject your body to wind and rain, wear thin clothes, and consume food with little nutrition. Avoid staying in the sun or near fire. If your awareness is agitated and your mind wanders, focus your gaze and attention on the black bindu. Engage in warm activities, massage, and consume nutritious food. If there is no dullness or agitation, focus your eyes and awareness on a bindu or a small blue object at the boundary of sunlight and shadow directly in front of you. First, think, "I will meditate on such a bindu, etc." Then, if it is clear, that is best; if it is not clear, simply think that such a thing exists. After that, do not analyze it, but naturally and without distraction remain in that state, limiting the increase of clarity. Meditate again, shortening each session and increasing the number of sessions; this is the fourth method of focusing the mind. Next, focus on the supportless: gaze with slightly open eyes at the sky directly in front of you, without any object of focus. Do not think about anything in your mind, remain without distraction, do not think about existence or non-existence, past or future. With great effort, maintain non-distraction, merely maintaining the alertness of awareness, and then relax, resting naturally and without artifice. Do not be distracted even for a moment, like threading a needle, without any movement, like an ocean without waves, free from all effort, resting like a garuda soaring through the sky, free from all hope and fear. Do not be distracted; do not let discursive thoughts arise. If you become distracted, a discursive thought will suddenly arise. As soon as it arises, recognize it, stare at it, and rest as before. Similarly, whatever discursive thoughts arise, recognize them, do not affirm or deny them, do not like or dislike them, but rest on them, looking at them with the eye of wisdom. Make that thought the support for focusing the mind and rest in it. If you are too tense, relax.

Fifth, guarding, without falling into any extreme. The method of holding the mind, relying on the breath, holding the vase-like breath, and remaining without distraction. If you cannot hold the vase-like breath, you must focus on numbers, etc., taking the breath flowing inward, the breath flowing outward, and the breath remaining inward as objects of focus. First, count about twenty-one times, then gradually count up to a hundred, etc. Focus the mind on the nostrils, taking the breath as a number, without being distracted by anything else. If you focus on filling and releasing, exhale the breath three times, then inhale as much as you can, pressing below the navel, and if you cannot press

Do not seek, do not cling, rest loosely. Relax, ease, and naturally let go, just like a baby who has had enough milk, or a bird collapsing from exhaustion, rest in relaxation, and in this state, maintain undistracted awareness. Other than that, do not think about anything, maintain a natural state. Meditate for a slightly longer period. Abide in stillness, then rest. During the meditation session, also maintain awareness. If practicing reverse meditation, when not distracted, conceptual thoughts will not arise; if distracted or due to sudden circumstances, many conceptual thoughts arise, should they be abandoned or not? Do not abandon them, but rather regard them as benefactors. In particular, let them flow naturally, let whatever wants to flow, flow. And, recognize the arising and passing of each thought. Do not abandon, nor follow. Do not like abiding and dislike flowing, do not worry that meditation is not progressing, do not expect good results, etc., do not have any hope or fear, but rather take the thought itself as the object of focus. Do not try to stop thoughts, do not intentionally pursue non-thought, but rather take the thought itself as the object, let it arise naturally, and when the thought naturally subsides and dissipates, the state of non-thought naturally appears, practice in this way, this is the seventh point. Then, regarding the manner of arising and introduction to shamatha, the characteristic of shamatha is that all conceptual thoughts of the mind and all clinging to appearances are pacified. Free from the three states of sinking, excitement, and dullness, abiding single-pointedly in the essence of non-thought, the shamatha previously attained through effort, now arises effortlessly, becoming easy, comfortable, spacious, and easy to maintain. Even when rising from meditation, the mind does not change, but remains in its original state. In daily activities such as walking, sitting, etc., awareness is slow, natural, and relaxed, appearing like burning ashes, without luster, if not intentionally directing awareness to the object, one cannot grasp the details of the object, and the mind does not fall into distraction. When the experiences of bliss, clarity, and non-thought are equally present, or when any one of these experiences is more intense, various experiences of seeing and hearing, supernormal powers, and magical displays will arise, and the ten signs, etc., will manifest accordingly, this is the faultless shamatha, which will arise in the mindstream. This is the basis for the arising of all qualities such as vipashyana, and in this state, whatever good or bad experiences arise, whether physical illness, mental suffering, good or bad dreams, supernormal powers and magical displays, bliss, clarity, non-thought, etc., do not cling to them.
