Relying on authentic virtuous friends, such as the lama who is the embodiment of the earth, the lama who is the embodiment of signs, and practicing the instructions as they are, relying on an authentic virtuous friend is the causal condition, so rely on them in this way, this is the tenth. Here, for what is established by terms and concepts, completely cut off all aspects of bias, and generate certainty that it is not contradictory to everything and is superior to everything, the original state of affairs, the natural state of reality. This is the unmistaken object of meditation, the objective condition, so be sure to determine it in this way, this is the eleventh. In the state of being free from attachment to meditation, generate diligence and perseverance, but do not think, "I will meditate, I have meditated, I am meditating," or "If it arises, it is good, if it does not arise, it is bad," and do not make any signs of hope or doubt, this is the immediate condition, so practice in an uncorrected state, this is the twelfth, which is the preliminary. The main practice is divided into calm abiding and insight. First, in general, although there are many ways to generate samadhi, if you know one key point, obstacles and hindrances will not arise, and calm abiding and insight, the flawless innate wisdom, will arise effortlessly. The Dharma is taught through the form of Vairochana, so the samadhi of the generation and completion stages, and the experience of bliss, clarity, and non-thought, will arise effortlessly. For beginners, it depends on the key points of the body. That is, in order to control the downward-clearing wind, place both legs in the vajra posture or the hero's posture. In order for the earth wind to abide in the central channel, straighten the spine like an arrow. In order for the water wind to enter the central channel, bind the hands in the gesture of equanimity below the navel, and let the tips of the arms lean against each other. In order for the fire wind to enter the central channel, bend the neck slightly like an iron hook. In order for the wind of wind to enter the central channel, look at the tip of the nose without opening or closing the eyes. The tongue should be placed naturally or touching the upper palate. By arranging the key points of the body in this way, the flow of conceptual thought will naturally be purified, and many qualities such as non-thought will arise. However, the key points of the body are only slightly adjusted, so that the body and mind are comfortable, neither too tight nor too loose. At first, exhale a little stale air, and then let go of the effort of exhaling and inhaling. Briefly recall the preliminaries,

Do not dwell on past actions, and do not think about what to do in the future. In the present moment, in the natural and relaxed state of ordinary awareness, without fabrication, simply rest without acceptance or rejection. This makes the mind pliable and gives rise to samadhi. Such physical posture and mental focus are the foundation of meditation, so it is crucial to pay close attention to them. If the mind cannot settle, then focus your attention on external objects such as trees, stones, statues, butter lamps, the sky, or anything else that is suitable. Gaze steadily at the object, without thinking about its color, shape, or other attributes. Avoid being either too tense or too lax, simply use it as an object of focus and remain undistracted. Completely cut off the flow of other thoughts, or visualize the essence of the body, speech, and mind of all Buddhas in the form of the white syllable (藏文:ༀ,梵文天城体:ॐ,梵文罗马拟音:oṃ,汉语字面意思:Om), the red syllable (藏文:ཨཱཿ,梵文天城体:आः,梵文罗马拟音:āḥ,汉语字面意思:Ah), or the blue syllable (藏文:ཧཱུྃ,梵文天城体:हूँ,梵文罗马拟音:hūṃ,汉语字面意思:Hum), or white, red, and blue bindus. Draw or visualize these in front of you as appropriate. In short, choose whatever visual object is most suitable and easy to focus on, and rest your mind on it with single-pointed attention. The way to rest is without clinging to anything, without mentally grasping at anything. If the mind rests, let it rest; if it wanders, let it wander. Do not frown or try to control it, but let it be. Completely cut off all signs of conceptual thoughts, such as wanting to meditate, not wanting to meditate, hoping the mind will settle, or fearing it will not. There is nothing to meditate on. Do not allow even a moment of distraction, but maintain mindfulness. Alternate short periods of meditation with short breaks, and with clarity, vividness, and alertness, repeatedly enter into samadhi, repeatedly interrupt thoughts, and diligently train without becoming discouraged. It is important to train in this way. If it is easier to focus on one of these objects, then focus on one. If you wish to gradually focus on all of them, that is also fine. If you can focus on one, that is sufficient, and there is no need to focus on all of them like learning the alphabet. In short, focus on any one visual object, and that is the second point. Once you can focus on a visual object, gradually focus on sounds heard by the ears, smells perceived by the nose, tastes experienced by the tongue, and tactile sensations felt by the body. When focusing on sounds, smells, and so on, simply be aware of the sound's loudness or the smell's intensity. At that moment, maintain focus without distraction, and grasp it with the hook of mindfulness, remaining in a natural state. Do not engage in judgments of good or bad, big or small, or any other evaluations. Focus on any one object, clearly and vividly, cut off thoughts, and rest without allowing confusion. Throughout all the breaks, maintain mindfulness.
