It is said that great things can also be accomplished, just like the abundant ripening of grains. Therefore, one should abandon even the slightest evil and cultivate even the slightest virtue. By diligently cultivating loving-kindness, compassion, and the mind of enlightenment, one can also accomplish the purpose of the Buddha's teachings. Do no evil whatsoever, practice perfect virtue, and completely subdue your own mind. This is the teaching of the Buddha. So it is said in the scriptures. In short, the essence of meditation is this: if one has the freedom to choose where to be reborn after death, that is sufficient. Since where one is reborn depends on the karma one has created, one should properly adopt and abandon based on the law of cause and effect, without confusion, and strive to practice accordingly. Examine your own mind, abandon evil, and diligently cultivate virtue. This is the fifth point of mind training. Next is meditating on the faults of samsara: From beginningless time, due to the root cause of ignorance, which is the clinging to self where there is no self, and the clinging to self where there is no self, the illusion of samsara arises, and one is continuously tormented by the three kinds of suffering. These are the suffering of conditioning (行苦, xíng kǔ), where the feeling is neutral; the suffering of change (坏苦, huài kǔ), where the feeling is pleasure; and the suffering of suffering (苦苦, kǔ kǔ), where the feeling of suffering is manifest. The examples are, respectively, like a spark being extinguished, then covered with grass, and someone sleeping on top of it, and then the wind blows and the spark reignites, causing harm to the person. The suffering of conditioning pervades from the peak of existence to the Avici hell, and even beings in the formless realms will fall when the force of their karma is exhausted. Merely taking this appropriated aggregate is filled with suffering. Ordinary beings do not understand this, but noble ones see it as it is. For example, a single hair placed on the palm of the hand is not uncomfortable, but if it enters the eye, it is uncomfortable. As it is said in the commentary on the Treasury of Knowledge (Abhidharmakośa): A single hair on the palm of the hand, if it enters the eye, causes discomfort and suffering. Ordinary people are like the palm of the hand, and do not perceive the subtle suffering of conditioning. Noble ones are like the eye, and see the suffering in conditioning.

It is like that. The suffering of change is the enjoyment of the flavors of desirable qualities such as forms, sounds, smells, tastes, and tactile sensations with attachment and craving. These are like the arrow of Mara, the female messenger, the honey on the razor's edge, saltwater, and intoxicating drinks. After enjoying them, unbearable suffering arises, and all the happiness of samsara ultimately turns into suffering, so one cannot transcend suffering. Even if one attains the status of a Chakravartin king, Indra, Brahma, etc., who are known as great in the world, they will ultimately turn into suffering. As it is said in the Letter to a Friend: "Even having become a Chakravartin king, one is still a slave to samsara. Even having become Indra, worthy of offerings, one will fall to the earth again due to karma. Even having attained the bliss of detachment as Brahma, one will eventually become fuel for the fire of Avici hell. One should rely on suffering that does not cease." Thus it is said. Therefore, because one does not see suffering and clings to happiness, one cannot let go of attachment and aversion to the eight worldly dharmas, and one loses the opportunity for the holy Dharma. Therefore, it is important to completely sever the rope of samsara, rather than being unable to bear even a single unpleasant word or something related to food and clothing. The suffering of suffering is abundant on each of the six realms of beings. Those with heavy sins are born in hell after death, and the way they experience suffering is that below this Jambudvipa, at a distance of twenty thousand yojanas, on a ground of burning hot iron, like freshly made ghee made by sins, suffering descends upon many yojanas. These are the eight hot hells: the Reviving Hell, the Black Line Hell, the Crushing Hell, the Crying Hell, the Great Crying Hell, the Hot Hell, the Very Hot Hell, and the Avici Hell. The neighboring hells, the pit of fire embers, the swamp of corpses, the path of sharp knives, the forest of sword leaves, the Shalmali tree, and the river of ashes without banks each exist in the four directions. The Treasury of Knowledge says: "Twenty thousand yojanas below this is the Avici Hell, and it is the same size. Above it are seven hells, and all eight have sixteen additions. On the four sides of these are fire pits, corpses, and rivers such as the path of sharp knives. There are eight other cold hells, such as those with water bubbles." Thus it is said. Cold hell
