At the time of death, thinking that nothing but the Dharma can help, sometimes struck down by one's own illness and dying, the corpse is sent to the cemetery and turns into bones, consciousness floats helplessly like a feather carried by the wind, one should have firm faith in this. Shorten the thoughts of sorrow and blindness. This is the third Dharma lesson and meditation lesson. Third, contemplating the law of karma: After that, one must contemplate the law of karma. In general, all happiness and suffering arise dependent on karma. The Hundred Karmas Sutra says, "Karmas are various, therefore they make beings various." The White Lotus of Compassion Sutra says, "The world is made by karma, transformed by karma. Sentient beings are made by karma, born from the cause of karma, and are distinguished by karma." The Treasury of Knowledge says, "From karma arise various worlds." Therefore, karma can be summarized into two types: karma of thought and karma after thought, and it can also be summarized into the three karmas of body, speech, and mind. This is thought and what is done by it. Thought is the karma of mind, and it generates the karmas of body and speech. So it is said in the sutra. Furthermore, the happiness and suffering that appear in this life are the result of the good or bad deeds done in previous lives. Whatever karma is practiced here, its ripening result will also appear in the next life. Practicing non-virtuous karma, its ripening result will lead to rebirth in the three lower realms. The result that is similar to the cause is: killing leads to short life, harming leads to much harm, stealing leads to poverty, adultery leads to being with enemies, lying leads to slander, divisive speech leads to separation from friends, harsh speech leads to hearing unpleasant sounds, irrelevant speech leads to disrespectful words, greed leads to destroying hope in the mind, harmful intent leads to giving fear, wrong view itself is a bad view. And, the dominant result is: the external environment is weak, much harm, dust accumulates, the smell is foul, high and low, there is saline soil, evil, the fruits are sparse, small or non-existent. So it is said. These are the results of practicing the ten non-virtuous actions. If one practices the ten virtuous actions, one will obtain a happy body in the happy realms, and will be born in a pleasant place. This is also due to practicing the three types of non-virtuous actions, great, medium, and small, as well as anger, desire, and ignorance.

The karma accumulated from arising from afflictions leads to rebirth in the hells, hungry ghosts, and animal realms. Practicing small amounts of virtue leads to human form, medium amounts to desire realm gods, etc., and large amounts to rebirth in the meditative and formless realms. As it is said in the Precious Garland: "Attachment, hatred, and ignorance, and the actions they generate, are non-virtuous. From non-virtue comes suffering, and likewise all the bad migrations. Without attachment, hatred, and ignorance, the actions they generate are virtuous. From virtue comes all the happy migrations, and happiness in all births." It also says: "Attachment causes one to go to the hungry ghost realm, hatred throws one into hell, and ignorance causes one to go to the animal realm." Also, according to the Sutra on Mindfulness: "Virtue obtains happiness, non-virtue brings suffering. Thus, virtue and non-virtue, actions and their results, are clearly shown." Also, in the Precious Garland: "Through meditation, immeasurable and formless, one obtains the happiness of Brahma and others." Thus it is said. The three non-virtuous actions of the body, the four of speech, and the three of mind, etc., all non-virtuous actions should be abandoned, and one should strive to practice the ten virtuous actions that are the opposite of these. As it is said in the Hundred Deeds Sutra: "The actions of sentient beings, even after a hundred eons, will not be wasted or destroyed. When the conditions are gathered and the time has come, the fruit will surely ripen." Whether one does good or evil, it plants a seed in the mind, and when it meets a condition that awakens it, the ripening, whether happiness or suffering, will appear infallibly. If the motivation is driven by afflictions, then no matter how much one guards the precepts, listens, contemplates, meditates, etc., all seemingly virtuous actions are merely disguised as Dharma and will not become genuine Dharma. Moreover, the result of one's own actions can only be experienced by oneself and cannot be shared with others. Unless one generates an antidote to destroy the seed, the latent tendencies will remain undiminished even after countless eons. The respective results will also appear infallibly. As it is said in the Sutra: "The actions done by Deva-datta himself will not ripen in the earth or water, but will only ripen in the aggregates and sense bases that he clings to. Who else will they ripen for?" Also, in the Compendium of Abhidharma: "How does one enjoy the share of karma? What is done by oneself"
