However prosperous, death cannot be averted. At the time of death, everything is left behind except for the fruits of past actions, and one goes naked and empty-handed, like a hair pulled from butter. Now, in this body, one cannot bear hunger, cannot bear cold, cannot bear thirst. Fearing beatings, fearing killings, fearing bondage, fearing capture, one endures suffering and hardship solely for the sake of sustaining the body. At the time of death, all of this becomes repulsive and turns its back, and possessions are seized by others. The body is bound with ropes and taken to the charnel ground, where it is eaten by birds and beasts, leaving only bones, without even a trace of its former self. Or it is burned in fire, leaving only a handful of ashes, or thrown into water, to be eaten by fish and frogs, or buried underground, becoming a nest for worms and insects. Since one cannot escape these circumstances, it is crucial at that time to have a firm and unregretful peace of mind, with nothing to rely on but white virtuous deeds and the Three Jewels. As it is said in the *Bodhicharyavatara*: "Though I lie on my bed, surrounded by all my relatives and friends, the pain of death is experienced by me alone." "When seized by the messengers of Yama, what help are relatives, what help are friends? At that time, only merit can protect, but I have not relied on it before." It is also said: "This body, which was obtained through much hardship and nourished with food and clothing, will not go with you; it will be eaten by birds and dogs, or burned by blazing fire, or rot in water, or be buried in a pit of earth." So it is said. This is the second Dharma session and meditation session. The actual manner of death is either being suddenly killed by fire, water, poison, weapons, planets, etc., or some are afflicted by long-term illness, and even if rituals and medical treatments are performed, they are of no avail, and the body and mind are overwhelmed by unbearable suffering. The strength to speak is lost. Food is beneficial, but it cannot be put into the mouth. One wants to drink water, but is prevented by the doctor. Sounds of "Ah-na-hu-hu" are emitted. One cannot sleep at night. One involuntarily dozes off during the day. One lies at the edge of the bed. The end of food is putting it in the mouth. The end of speech is emitting groans. Dust accumulates on the face. Filth clings to the clothes. One feels as if one is falling into the ground. Breath is exhaled from the mouth and does not return, and the eyes roll back and one dies. The body is taken to a certain cemetery. The mind, separated from the body, is driven by one's own accumulated

Driven by the force of karma, one wanders helplessly in the bardo; controlled by karma, one grasps the place of rebirth in the next life. As it is said in the sutras: 'Abandon this world, go to the next world. Great beings guide, enter the great darkness. Parents, siblings, sons, and daughters surround, breath ceases, wealth is divided.' Crying out, 'Alas, father! Alas, mother! Alas, child!' Hair is torn. At that time, there is no refuge, place, or support other than the Dharma. At that time, the Dharma will become an island, a protector, a place, and a guide. It will happen as it is said. Furthermore, the holy beings of the past, realizing impermanence, spurred on their minds, abandoned this life, and made practice the essence, thereby perfecting both aims. Such as Jowo Je, Lotsawa Rinchen Zangpo, Chaktri Chenpo, Ame Jangchub Sherab Dorje, Dzeng Gom Wangchuk Gyaltsen, Potowa, Kharakpa, and many other wise and accomplished ones, spurred on their minds with impermanence, engaged in practice without delay, and thereby attained siddhis. We, having food and clothing, are not satisfied; we need something better. Having wealth to use is not enough; we need to accumulate more. The Dharma, which can be done or not done, seems to be a thorn in our hearts. If we are mindful, thinking 'There is nothing,' it is very important to learn from the biographies of the previous lamas. Therefore, a virtuous friend who teaches even one word of Dharma is better than a universal monarch. Living in a simple mud house, secluded from the non-virtues of body, speech, and mind, is better than a palace adorned with gardens and the seven precious things. Having little desire and being content is a greater wealth than accumulating much wealth, so it is important to put it into practice. Therefore, thinking that death is uncertain, restrain your mind, generate renunciation, and with a strong sense of urgency, spend day and night in virtuous activities, without letting meaningless thoughts waste time. It is very important to meditate on death and impermanence. If understanding and certainty of death and impermanence have not arisen in your mind, meaningless thoughts will not cease. If meaningless thoughts do not cease, you will not strive in virtuous activities, but will become lazy, so whether or not you engage in virtuous activities depends on this. In short, what should be meditated upon is: the end of birth is only death, and it is uncertain when death will come.
