Those with little faith cannot understand the Buddha's enlightenment. Thus it is said. The sutra says: For people without faith, white qualities do not arise, like seeds burned by fire, like blue sprouts. Thus it is said. The sutra says: Kundgawo, engage in faith. This is the request of the Tathagata. Thus it is said. What is faith? In the Abhidharma, it is said: What is faith? It is to have great trust, desire, and satisfaction in actions and their results, truths, and the Three Jewels. Thus it is said. Among these are the faith of joy, the faith of trust, and the faith of desire. The first is to rely on the object of the Three Jewels, and to have devotion and joy in the Three Jewels and the Lama. The second is to have faith in the result of virtuous actions, the happiness of the desire realm, and the result of non-virtuous actions, suffering, and the result of unwavering actions, the happiness of the higher realms, and to have faith in obtaining the five contaminated aggregates of suffering based on actions and afflictions; in short, it is to have faith in the law of cause and effect. The third is to respectfully study the path in order to attain unsurpassed enlightenment. The Ratnavali says: Whoever does not abandon the Dharma due to desire, hatred, fear, and ignorance is called a faithful person and is certainly a supreme vessel of goodness. Thus, not abandoning the Dharma through the gates of the three poisons of attachment, hatred, and ignorance is also established as faith. The benefit is that the mind of a supreme person arises, and immeasurable benefits such as abandoning the eight unfavorable conditions arise. If there is faith, then the Tathagatas will also come to that place and teach the Dharma. In the Jewel Garland Sutra it says: Having faith in the Buddha and the Buddha's Dharma, having faith in the conduct of the Buddha's sons, having faith in unsurpassed enlightenment, then the mind of great beings arises. Thus it is said. The Bodhisattva Pitaka says: Thus, the Bodhisattva who abides in faith is recognized by the Buddhas, the Bhagavad, as a vessel of the Buddha's Dharma, and they go to that place and truly teach the Bodhisattva's path. Thus it is said. Therefore, having obtained a human body and possessing a mind of faith, one should not waste this opportunity on non-virtuous and neutral activities, but should diligently engage in virtuous practices.

Otherwise, even if one has not actually accumulated sins of body and speech, the ripening results that arise in cyclic existence due to uncontrolled non-virtuous thoughts will make it impossible to know where one will be born in the next life. If one has not done virtuous deeds, but has accumulated sins, then even after hundreds of millions of eons, one will not hear the sound of a happy rebirth. It is said, 'What will happen if one falls into the states of disadvantage?' Therefore, one should meditate on the difficulty of obtaining this leisure and endowment, its ease of destruction, and its many benefits, until genuine understanding and conviction arise in one's mind. Even if one knows that leisure and endowment are difficult to obtain, if one does not strive in virtuous activities, what is the point of having obtained something so difficult to find? One should strive day and night without laziness in listening, thinking, and meditating, like extinguishing a fire on one's head. It is important to protect the three trainings like one's eyes and to be diligent in cultivating the mind of enlightenment. In short, what should be meditated on is: the precious human body of leisure and endowment is difficult to obtain and easy to destroy, so from today onwards, I will engage in virtuous activities without any hesitation. This is the object of focus and the first session of Dharma. Secondly, meditating on death and impermanence. The Teacher said: 'Monks, all conditioned phenomena are impermanent.' How are they impermanent? In the Chapter on Categories, it says: 'Accumulation will eventually be exhausted, what is erected will eventually fall, meeting will eventually lead to separation, and life will eventually lead to death.' And it says: 'Alas! Conditioned phenomena are impermanent, they are by nature to arise and cease.' As it is said, all conditioned phenomena are impermanent and changing, therefore life is also impermanent. Moreover, in the external world, there are the three stages of formation, duration, and destruction of an eon, years, months, days, mornings, evenings, and the changes of the four seasons, etc., which change and are impermanent in every moment. As it is said in the Commentary on Valid Cognition: 'The three realms are impermanent, like clouds in the sky.' So it is said. The sentient beings within, from birth to old age, etc., the three doors of body, speech, and mind do not remain still for even a moment, but exist in a state of change. In particular, the people of the southern continent of Jambudvipa have no certainty of lifespan, and will die unexpectedly due to various sudden causes. In the Chapter on Categories, it says: 'Some die in the womb, likewise'
