Mahāmudrā From the Bindu: *Phyag* (Tibetan, hand) is the wisdom of emptiness, *rgya* (Tibetan, seal) is liberation from the laws of samsara, *chen po* (Tibetan, great) is the union of the two, hence it is called *Phyag rgya chen po* (Tibetan, Mahāmudrā, Great Seal). And as it says in the Four Syllable Tantra: *Phyag* (Tibetan, hand) is the wisdom of emptiness, *rgya* (Tibetan, seal) is without bias, *chen po* (Tibetan, great) is beyond limits, therefore it is known as the four syllables. And as it says in the Great Mother Tantra: *Phyag* (Tibetan, hand) is the inseparability of bliss and emptiness, because it is inseparable, it is *rgya* (Tibetan, seal) itself. And as Dagpo Rinpoche said: What is called *phyag* (Tibetan, hand) is the realization that all appearances, existence, samsara, and nirvana do not deviate from the nature of reality, which is unborn. In general, all appearances and existence do not deviate from the meaning of the original state, therefore it is *rgya* (Tibetan, seal). Realizing the nature of reality as self-liberated is *chen po* (Tibetan, great). And as Zhang Rinpoche said: What is called *Phyag rgya chen po* (Tibetan, Mahāmudrā, Great Seal) is *phyag rgya* (Tibetan, seal) because of its meaning of non-deviation. It is called *chen po* (Tibetan, great) because it is vast and extensive. For example, no border country or anything else can transgress the seal of the decree of a Chakravartin king. Similarly, no dharma of samsara or nirvana can transgress the unborn state of Mahāmudrā, because their very nature is the unborn state of Mahāmudrā. Therefore, it is called *chen po* (Tibetan, great) because it is vast and extensive. And as Orgyenpa said: Because all the agents of appearance, existence, samsara, and nirvana do not deviate from this, there is no better thing to seek above this Mahāmudrā than the Dharmakāya, therefore it is called *chen po* (Tibetan, great). And as Glorious Khachöpa said: The meaning of *phyag* (Tibetan, hand) is the union of space and wisdom. The liberation of samsara in its own place is the meaning of *rgya* (Tibetan, seal). Thus, the unsurpassed wisdom of union is *chen po* (Tibetan, great). And as Gyalwa Mikyö Dorje said: Moreover, *phyag rgya* (Tibetan, seal) is so called because all the dharmas of samsara and nirvana do not deviate from it. For example, small countries and ministers cannot transgress the seal of the decree of a Chakravartin king. *Chen po* (Tibetan, great) is so called because it transcends karma, dharma, and vows, or because there is nothing more powerful than this. And as it says in the words of my glorious lama: *Phyag* (Tibetan, hand) is a term of respect, meaning the hand of the Buddhas. *Rgya* (Tibetan, seal) means union and non-deviation from it. What is called *chen po* (Tibetan, great)

Other mudras are temporary, so there is transcendence, but this is ultimate, so no one can transcend it, therefore it is the meaning of being supreme. As it is said in many sutras, tantras, and instructions. "Co-emergent union" refers to: The Dakini said, "Whatever is co-emergent, the co-emergent that is born, that is what is spoken of. The very nature of co-emergence, all forms are a single aggregate." This is the meaning of co-emergence. And, "Everything arises from the unborn, and as soon as it arises, it has no nature." This is the meaning of arising, and union is the meaning of yoga. Yoga is not in the manner of skillful means, nor is it solely through wisdom, but the equal union of skillful means and wisdom, the Thus-Gone One spoke of yoga. This is the meaning of union. Thus, merely by briefly showing the essence of the meaning of the Great Seal of Co-emergent Union, even those with the supreme faculty and fortune will be liberated, and there is no need to rely on many aspects of meaning. Thus it is said. Dagpo Rinpoche said, "Co-emergent union, what and what are co-emergent and united? Awareness and emptiness arise together. They themselves are not like existing separately. Awareness, clarity, bliss are united with emptiness, therefore it is co-emergent union." Thus it is said. Ba Ra Gyaltsen Pal Zang said, "The definition is: 'Mudra' means emptiness, and 'seal' means non-transcendence. Therefore, all phenomena of appearance and existence, all that is untransformed, unchanged, undefiled, intact, and unbroken, the nature or reality of all that appears and arises, abides in emptiness without any establishment, therefore it is mudra. In the Tantra of Buddha Samayoga it is said: 'Ema, the secret of all Buddhas! The perfect Buddha has no birth. Everything arises from the unborn. As soon as it arises, it has no birth.' Thus it is said. No matter how many various good and bad appearances of grasping and apprehended arise, because they do not transcend emptiness, therefore it is a seal. For example, just as birds fly in the sky or fish swim in the outer ocean, they do not transcend the sky and water. In the Glorious Guhyasamaja Tantra it is said: All dharmas are the nature of mind, mind is the nature of emptiness, all are of one taste in emptiness, this is the realm without acceptance or rejection."
