That is to abide effortlessly in the state of recognizing equality. The eightieth Dharma talk. The great freedom from elaboration is: cutting off clinging to all external and internal dharmas, and knowing appearances as one's own mind. Mind and appearances have no self-nature, are free from objects of focus, and are easily realized as being like the center of the sky. Previously, one was not comfortable with appearances, but comfortable with awareness, and practice was done with awareness. Here, appearances are known as mind, mind is known as emptiness, appearances are understood as emptiness, emptiness is the main focus of meditation, and clinging is cut off in emptiness, so all dharmas are without self-nature or unestablished. This present appearance, without any loss, is somewhat uncomfortable. It is believed that this appearance is a groundless illusion. In this case, one constantly meditates during the day and holds onto dreams at night, and many confusions and realizations arise. These arise because sleep weakens memory. Even when disturbed by strong external conditions, one may slightly enter into subsequent awareness. If these sprouts of meditation do not become ownerless, they will always be inseparable. Do not let memory be without continuity, and rely slightly on memory, as memory is important. Freedom from elaboration and equality are distinguished by memory. Between freedom from elaboration and samsara and nirvana, there is only the difference between remembering and not remembering. The main point of the instructions is memory. If one does not cling to whatever arises, then even strong anger is self-empty. If one does not recognize the nature and clings, although it seems that there are no afflictions and thoughts, it is ignorance. If it is not separated from recognizing the nature, although the appearance of afflictions is continuous, there is no need to reject or accept it. As a sign of this, the mind does not arise to seek emptiness separately from whatever arises. After purifying thoughts, the appearance of awareness is clear and bright. If one cannot always be in that state, one must rely on memory. It is difficult to hold onto a thought with a memory for a long time. Therefore, one should constantly rely on memory. If one is not harmed by the conditions of the day, it is called realizing great freedom from elaboration. That is, realizing that the nature of mind is free from arising and ceasing, and seeing it as beyond thought. The worldly mind will not be jealous at other times, and many qualities such as clairvoyance will appear. The appearance of subsequent attainment is illusory, realizing the nature of the mind of enlightenment, sometimes doubting.
