Thus it is said. The great Brahmin Saraha said: The nature of mind is the single seed of all things. In it, there is the flow of existence and suffering, and it is what grants the fruit of desire. I prostrate to the mind that is like a wish-fulfilling jewel. As it is said, whatever impure or pure appearances arise to you, you should determine that they are only your own mind, and that there is not even a little that is external to your own mind. This is the first Dharma lesson. Second, introducing from the perspective of appearances: Appearances are mind, mind is emptiness, emptiness is spontaneously accomplished, and introducing spontaneous accomplishment as naturally liberated, etc. First, again, do not forget the preliminaries, etc., as before. Focus your eyes and mind on one object that is clear before your eyes, and look at it without distraction. At first, the appearance of that object itself will appear. Then you will not want to look. Then your eyes will become blurry. At that time, look at whether the object that appears to your eyes is separate from your own mind. When you look, the support of the eye is the object of sight. If you say that the mind that sees is inside, then where is the mind, inside, outside, or in between? What is the object and what is the mind? Since the mind is still not grasping the object, let the mind look at how the object appears in the mind, its color, and shape. If you say that the appearance is in the mind, then to further examine whether you have reached a definite understanding, you should ask: Did the object go into the mind, or did the mind go into the object? Furthermore, when it comes to the four elements, etc., do the four elements turn around and think, "I am the four elements"? In reality, the mind thinks "four elements," and the mind thinks "it is the four elements," etc., so examine it well. Likewise, focus your mind on sound, smell, taste, and touch in turn, and have them examine and investigate well as before, and ask. When you look, if you say that there is nothing there except the object of focus, and that the mind that sees has no color or shape, etc., then that is the meaning of the inseparability of appearance and mind, and it is because you have relied on single-pointed focus to establish experience. Therefore, you should know that it is realized through the instructions and blessings of the holy lama, and that it is very fortunate. This mind is nothing other than the appearance of delusion that arises in the object of focus, etc. As the Lankavatara Sutra says: Of habitual patterns.

This is the disturbed mind. It arises completely in appearance. It is not real. It is the nature of mind itself. Seeing external things as real is wrong. It says. The Avatamsaka Sutra says: "Oh, sons of the Victorious Ones, these three realms are only mind." It says. Birwapa said: "All phenomena are appearances of mind, like reflections." It says. The Guide to the Bodhisattva's Way of Life says: "Who made the iron ground that is burned? From where did those masses of fire come? The Buddha said that all of them are sinful minds." It says, and so on. As taught in countless authentic scriptures, practice accordingly. The twenty-fifth Dharma, the forty-first goal. Again, draw the mind inward and ask whether the body and mind dwell separately or as one. If you say they are separate, do the body and mind dwell like a house and a person, or like a body and clothes? Whichever of these two it is, when something like a thorn pierces anywhere from the head to the sole of the foot, which, the body or the mind, feels the burning sensation? If the body feels it, then the tongue should also be able to feel it, but it does not. If the mind feels it, then the body and mind are separate, and since the mind feels the pain that occurs in the body, then when cutting down trees and digging the earth outside, the mind should also feel pain. Moreover, since it is said that appearances dwell in the mind, if distant appearances dwell in the mind, how could the nearby body not be in the mind? Therefore, the body and appearances are either both mind or both not mind, and there is no other possibility. So, examine and think carefully. If the body and mind are one, then when the body is born and dies, the mind should also be born and die. When the body changes, the mind should also change, and when the mind changes, the body should also change, and when the body is burned by fire, the mind should also be burned by fire, and so on. Are there not these faults? Therefore, generate diligence, meditate, and examine and think carefully, not just understanding the literal meaning, but definitely integrating the experience into your mind, completely cutting off doubts, and then bring back the answer. Again, the question of feeling pain when a thorn pierces the body, and the appearance of the body as something that is born and dies, etc., are all because of not realizing that appearances and mind are inseparable, and not untying the knot of grasping and clinging, so that is how it appears. But in reality, other than the appearances of one's own mind, there is nothing that is truly established. The corpse at the time of death is also like that.
