It arises from... The benefit is to suppress coarse afflictions and suffering. The thirty-ninth Dharma session. Second is Vipassana (higher seeing), which involves looking at the nature of reality, the essence of the mind, cutting off the root, establishing emptiness, and introducing it. First, do a rough and brief preliminary practice, and don't forget the objects of Shamatha (calm abiding). First, let the mind relax naturally, and the way to settle it is to be like the sun without clouds, with clarity and radiance. When feelings arise, know that the mind is like water and waves. There is clarity but no grasping, like a child seeing a temple. In that state, one's own mind abides, and in what way does its nature abide? What color is it? What is its shape and form? Is it a substance or non-substance? Where did it come from in the beginning? Where does it abide now? Where does it disappear in the end? Does it abide in one's own body, or does it abide in a form similar to names, internal and external objects, and the six realms of beings? Examine and analyze carefully, and if you find that the color, shape, and nature are like this, that's good. If you can't find it, don't be discouraged, and keep trying to observe with great effort. Fortieth Dharma session, thirty-third object of focus. In that state of abiding, ask what the nature of the mind is like. If the answer is that one is just abiding and doesn't know what the nature of the mind is like, then know that it is an indeterminate, dim awareness? Or is it a clear and bright awareness? If the answer is the latter, then one has seen the nature of the mind. If the answer is the former, then practice again. Also ask, what is the difference between the previous time of abiding and now? If the answer is that the previous state of abiding felt dull and loose, without radiance, and was drowsy, and that one was settled in that state, detached from the previous effort, not able to distinguish the details of the object clearly, and not seeing the nature of awareness, it was thick, like putting awareness into a hole, or like a beggar clinging to a benefactor, abiding in a state of unclear awareness. But this time, the abiding of the mind is clear, transparent, and without grasping. If that is the answer, then one has seen the nature of the mind to some extent. If the answer is that there is no difference from before, then it can only suppress afflictions.

To accomplish Bodhi, it is necessary to generate the wisdom of Vipassanā on top of that in the continuum, so you should cultivate diligently and experience it between generation and generation. Also, If you search for abiding and cannot find it, let the mind wander. The so-called mind is this wandering mind that remembers what it shouldn't and doesn't remember what it should, that flows where it shouldn't and doesn't flow where it should. What color does it wander with? What shape? What essence does it wander with? Does it abide in the object of eye consciousness, or in the objects of the five senses, sound, smell, taste, touch? Or does it wander in the form of the five elements, the six realms of beings, etc., from the crown of your head to the soles of your feet, between the senses, the heart, the limbs, the body, the hair, and the end of the skin? Is the essence of that mind existent, nonexistent, both, or neither? How does it wander and abide? Examine it carefully. The forty-first Dharma session, the thirty-fourth contemplation. Second, cutting off the root: If you cannot find it when you search like this, search for that mind again diligently as before. If you cannot find it when you search like this, how does the searcher abide? What is the difference between the mind that was previously released into its own nature and the mind that is now examined? How are the place of origin, the place of dwelling, and the place of going of that mind? Examine it well and then search. Also, let the mind change, identify one arising and two arisings, and ask whether the one who abides and the one who moves are the same or not. If they say the two are one, introduce them as one. For example, if a couple has one child, he will not come to the father's side when he is on the mother's side, and he will not come to the mother's side when he is on the father's side, like sending messages back and forth. Similarly, the mind does not move when it abides, and it does not abide when it moves. The one mind that abides and moves is the same, so introduce abiding and moving as one. Some people see the essence of the mind but cannot express it, cannot speak the language of Dharma, so you must examine and ask about the limits of experience. Some people can speak the language of Dharma without confusion even though it has not arisen in their continuum, so you must distinguish the language of Dharma and restrain it well, because the language of understanding Dharma cannot cope, and it will come out exaggeratedly from the side. For these people, you must measure them with your own experience and then guide them well with skillful means. The forty-second Dharma session, the thirty-fifth contemplation.
