It is called "Sakyuma". (Ja) Some people, even when they feel thoughts are swirling, think that those are empty, so they slap and let the thoughts scatter everywhere. Doing so is even worse. For this situation, it is best to observe the very thought of "I am distracted" as soon as the thought arises. Even if you can't do that, don't regret it afterwards, but relax when you remember, and untie it like untying a knot. (Nya) Some people interrupt just as they are about to be distracted. And the so-called "relaxation" refers to letting go like waiting for fish in the water, without noticing the thief of thoughts. This is the fault of excessive relaxation, so it is said that it is important to add awareness to it. (Ta) Also, if you tighten too much, feel stiff or tense when trying hard, or if the body and speech are bound, then it is important to relax and transform. (Tha) Also, for some people, when they remember a fierce place or someone, it seems that their mind has reached the root of that place, feeling that that place is in this state of viewing, and when they look at it without fabrication, it will disappear. After that, if there is a loud sound or a feverish body, return to that thought. Then a meaningless thought suddenly arises. And it feels like you are always staying in that state of viewing. For all of these, the most important thing is that when awareness goes somewhere, stare at it intently, and it will naturally liberate itself. Even if you can't do that, shorten the time and relax and loosen repeatedly. (Da) Also, consciousness is like a monkey, if you put a monkey in an empty house, it will peep out of all the windows and imitate people's movements, similarly, thoughts also, when the eyes see something, they chase and imitate it. Similarly, when you feel sound, smell, taste, touch, etc., it also chases and imitates it like that. Recognizing this and placing it on your own foundation, the skill will quickly be perfected, and you need to know like knowing the subtle trembling of the tip of a hair. If you do that but say you don't know, then let it go for a long time, and sometimes do some meditation in the state of viewing, the so-called meditation is holding on to memory, artificial meditation. Most of the meditators nowadays do this, so it is said that don't do mental fabrication and artificial meditation there, but keep calm with one mind. (Na) Water Letting go like a drop of water dripping into water means being aware of every thought that arises.

vanishing without a trace from (delusions), like the tip of a bird's feather being blown by the wind, if awareness immediately recognizes this wavering, one will not be confused by it. These can also become obstacles to and aids for śamatha and vipaśyanā. If needed, this is the thirty-eighth Dharma teaching. The supreme obstacle clearing and assistance depends on devotion. Great devotion brings great meditation, medium devotion brings medium meditation, and inferior devotion brings inferior meditation. If there is no devotion at all, meditation will not arise. Therefore, here, the quality of meditation depends on the degree of devotion, so it is crucial to pray from the depths of one's heart and focus solely on devotion. Thus, for beginners, it is important to shorten the meditation sessions. Initially, even each inhalation and exhalation counts as one session. Afterward, gradually increase the (time). It is important to distinguish between good and bad, such as feeling good at the end of yesterday's retreat, and feeling good again immediately after starting. The same applies when feeling bad. The same goes for meditation sessions. In general, if one becomes lazy at the beginning of a retreat or meditation session, it will get worse and worse, and it will be difficult to correct later on. If some practice is done at the beginning, the retreat and meditation will become easier and will improve. When focusing, if the object of focus is clear and unwavering, focus on it for as long as possible. If it is not clear enough, clearly identify the object, think in your mind, "I will meditate on this," and then relax without embellishment. This is also due to the power of the instructions on mind-holding, the mind abiding nearby, which is called śamatha. Merely being slightly calm because one has not encountered the conditions for distraction does not count as samādhi, because this state can also occur in those who are as foolish as sheep, so it is impure. Whenever, through the power of yoga, the mind attains single-pointedness for a moment, a few days, a few months, a few years, or even an eon, it can be said to be the samādhi of śamatha, with various distinctions of small, medium, and large. Śamatha means that the mind is calmed, without the signs of afflictions or conceptual thoughts, and abides single-pointedly in the essence of virtue, so it is called that. The cause of śamatha is reliance on ethics, the nature is being devoid of afflictive conceptual thoughts, and the condition is the special way in which the mind abides.
