Mere hearing will not accomplish it. It is said, 'Speaking mantras, the Perfection of Wisdom, the Vinaya, Sutras, Abhidharma, and so on, each with its own texts and established tenets, will not reveal the Great Seal of Clear Light.' Because of desiring recitation, the Clear Light is obscured by not seeing. By guarding vows with conceptual thought, one falls away from the meaning of the commitments. As Tilopa said. If one does not remember death and impermanence, and does not turn one's mind away from samsara, and is bound by the eight worldly concerns, one will not be included in the ranks of the wise, virtuous, and excellent. Therefore, strive to abandon what leads to those eight concerns, and as it arises from the guru's instructions, settle the mind in its natural state. Therefore, having decided that all scattered thoughts are without essence, one should single-pointedly focus solely on samadhi. Also, one should practice the object of meditation for underground practice as mentioned above. Dullness is not the absence of drowsiness, but the absence of clarity of awareness, or lethargy is sinking into sleepiness, so in that state, one does not even feel the arising of conceptual thoughts. One cannot even distinguish between good and bad experiences. As an antidote, one can use the above-mentioned object of meditation and conduct, and make a hole in the wall of one's sleeping place. Then, allow the wind coming from there to touch the body. The cause of dullness and lethargy is also that from previous lives onwards, one has slandered the guru and the Three Jewels, so confess before a special object of veneration. Diligently engage in the practice of the Hundred Syllable Mantra and the Vajrasattva meditation recitation, etc., to purify sins. Clean stupas, prostrate, and make offerings, etc., to dispel it. Alternatively, without seeking a separate antidote for dullness and agitation, by looking at the nature of that itself, one recognizes it as one's own mind, or by realizing that the mind is emptiness free from elaboration, the awareness of dullness and agitation itself arises as wisdom without being abandoned. In that way, it is impossible not to control the mind. There, the three experiences of bliss, clarity, and non-conceptuality will arise, and the thought 'I have meditated well, I am realized' will come. However, if one does not supplicate the Lord, and if attachment is not turned away from the depths, even if the meditation experience is good, it is just a little decoration. Therefore, in order to cultivate meditation, it is important to generate devotion and supplication, reverse attachment to this life, and go to a solitary place. Meditation without generating devotion is headless. Meditation without reversing attachment is footless. What can a body without a head and feet do?

And it's not okay either. Thus, due to the power of the experience of bliss, clarity, and non-conceptuality arising, attachment to desirable qualities will disappear. There is no need to eat food either, and one doesn't even feel the movement of breath. A great feeling of joy arises, thinking that this is also the intention of the Buddha. A strong conviction arises towards the lama, thinking that the lama is the Buddha. Defiled clairvoyance and miraculous powers, etc., may also arise, but one should not be attached to them. If one cultivates this one-pointed experience for a year, later, having attained realization, it will become stable. The measure of stability in calm abiding is that, at the best level, one does not feel the movement of breath and body, or their existence. At the intermediate level, one feels them. At the lowest level, the movement of breath and the weight of the body do not cause harm. End of the thirty-sixth Dharma discourse. Third, enhancing stability: First, focus the mind one-pointedly on whatever clear form appears in one's field of vision, whether good or bad. When that becomes clear, focus on the extent of what one sees. When that is stable, then take whatever arises as the object of focus—the sound that appears in the field of hearing, the smell that appears in the field of smell, the taste that appears in the field of taste, the touch that appears in the field of body, and the dharma that appears in the field of mind—and remain one-pointedly on that. In particular, focus one-pointedly on whatever thoughts arise in the field of mind, such as the thoughts to be abandoned, like the five poisons of attachment, hatred, etc.; the thoughts to be adopted, like generosity and other virtuous thoughts; and the thoughts that are neutral. Some say that one must strictly block the thoughts to be abandoned, but if one does that, thoughts will become more numerous and it will be difficult to generate samadhi. Therefore, whatever thoughts arise, do not view the thoughts as a fault, but loosely and gently rest on the thoughts themselves. Without losing mindfulness, allow the thoughts to move as much as they change. Without letting any single thought go out of control, recognize each thought that arises. Then rest a little, and meditate in that way again. The thoughts will become the support for holding the mind, and the thoughts will cease, which is not impossible. If that has not happened and thoughts are still numerous, do not view that as a fault, but cultivate without distraction. In that way, there is no difference between looking at an object in the past and looking at thoughts now, so that itself becomes the best method for focusing the mind. In the Ornament of the Sutras, it says: Because attachment and so forth are right there, and proper engagement is right there, therefore liberation from them occurs in just that way, therefore liberation from those occurs through them.
