Although there may be special signs such as pleasantness, if attachment is not reversed from the depths, then even if the meditation experience is good, it is only a slight tremor. Therefore, it is important not to be attached to this, but to increase it like an illusion. Twenty-ninth Dharma session, twenty-sixth object. Third, holding the mind on the wind: Hold the breath, focus on it, or if you cannot hold the breath, consider the arising, entering, and abiding of the wind as one, counting from twenty-one to eighty-nine or one hundred, etc., and do not be distracted from the nostrils, but keep your mind one-pointedly. Thirtieth Dharma session, twenty-seventh object. Furthermore, if many thoughts arise continuously, do not regard it as a fault, but think of letting the thoughts flow as much as possible, and meditate in joy. Recognize the extent to which thoughts flow with mindfulness, do not let it get out of control, and place it in a rootless state, so that thoughts become the basis for settling the mind, thereby liberating from the rootless and giving rise to abiding. At these times, do not be distracted even for a moment, like threading a needle, or like a barber entering a battle. The mind itself has no movement and can be relaxed as desired, like a bird jumping from a boat, or like an ocean away from waves, without any effort, like a garuda spreading its wings, or like a wise man taming an elephant, these are applicable to all occasions of calm abiding. At these times, also hold the thought that I will grasp the mind, and in practice, arrange a sentinel of mindfulness to carefully check whether your mind is abiding, whether it is dull or scattered. If you find that the mind is abiding, do not shake it. If you find that the mind is not abiding and there is a fault of dullness or scattering, you should strive to eliminate these faults. The method can be known from the oral instructions. Meditation should also start from one Dharma session for each breath at the beginning, and then gradually extend the time of the Dharma session. If it is continuous from the beginning, the objects will be confused, become chaotic, and give rise to the fault of laziness, so beginners should conduct short, frequent Dharma sessions, rest in a clear, energetic, and determined state, and continue repeatedly, without separating meditation and hostility, and gently calm the mind.

It is very important to strive for the method of generating wisdom. The thirty-first Dharma discourse, the twenty-eighth key point. Like this, relying on the practice of the key instructions to realize what has not been realized, the three stages of abiding gradually arise. First, the mind cannot firmly abide on the object of focus, there is distraction, only slightly grasping. Then, when awareness is slightly clear, it seems that more conceptual thoughts arise than before, but this is not an increase. Previously, without practice, even if conceptual thoughts arose, they were not noticed. Now, with the mind equally abiding and awareness clear, they can be noticed. Regarding this, do not follow the distraction of conceptual thoughts, abide in this way, so that conceptual thoughts will not fall into the lower streams, and each arising thought can be recognized. There is no need to shorten the time, awareness seems to become thin, but if the continuity of practice is not interrupted, this is called the first stage of abiding, like water flowing from a steep cliff. If it is like water flowing from a steep cliff with waves and torrents, and we are caught in it and carried away, that is not it. If it seems like watching with indifference, that is it. Regarding this, by watching in the manner described above, conceptual thoughts will become subtle and enter a state of non-conceptuality. Sometimes some conceptual thoughts will suddenly arise, but they will not be continuous, disappearing like snow falling on a stone. The mere movement of thoughts, the number and details can be calculated, and if one's practice continuity becomes slow, this is called the intermediate stage of abiding, like a slowly flowing river. If it feels far away and the flow of the river cannot be clearly seen, that is not it. If it feels like seeing it up close, that is it. Regarding this, guarding as before, the continuity of coarse and subtle conceptual thoughts is cut off, and one abides in a state of non-conceptuality. The comfort or existence of the body is not felt. The coming and going of breath stops or is not felt. The mind is happy, clear, and naturally enters a state of non-conceptuality. In the post-meditation state, if one does not observe carefully, one cannot grasp the details of objects. The mind does not engage in distraction, and seems to become very forgetful. Even without practice, one can naturally enter meditation. Having clarity, like the center of a clear cloudless sky, experiencing a light without depth or breadth, this is called the final stage of abiding, like a calm ocean. If it is like an ocean in the dark, that is not it. If it is like an ocean in the daytime, that is it. This is the main practice of meditation, and if it is maintained for a long time, supernormal powers and the like will appear, and higher truths can be realized.
