Arise, stir from the collection of excitement of what is to be meditated on and who is meditating. Do not fall into the conventions of body posture and gaze. With the force of devotion, make sure the mindstream is not exhausted, and even if you sit roughly and crookedly, do not want the mind to stay. In general, the characteristic of one's own mind is that it cannot be grasped if you try to hold it, and if you let it go, there is nowhere for it to go. All the signs of hope and fear depend on that reality, so if you do not know how to release the mind into itself, you will not be able to meditate. Thus it is said. Tilopa said: Let all the activities of the body completely and thoroughly abide in relaxation. Let the speech of the tongue be without words, like the echo of a hollow valley, empty and silent. Do not think of anything in the mind, but look at the nature of the moon. The body has no essence, like the trunk of a bamboo tree. The mind is like the center of the sky, beyond the realm of thought. In that strength, release and abide without letting go or grasping. Thus it is said. Do not make an effort in the mind, be free from all desires. Self-arising, self-pacifying, like a drawing on water. If you do not abide or fixate, and do not stray from the meaning, and do not transgress the samaya, it is a lamp in the darkness. If you are free from all desires and do not abide at the extremes, you will see all the Dharma of the Tripitaka. If you focus on this meaning, you will be liberated from the bonds of samsara. If you meditate on this meaning, you will burn all sins and obscurations. It is said to be the lamp of the teachings. Thus it is said. Cut off all connections with worldly attachment and aversion, and meditate alone in the forest or in a secluded monastery. Abide in a state of non-meditation. If you attain without attaining, you will attain the Great Seal. Thus it is said. From the Resting the Mind in its Natural State: First, relax and let go, in order to clear away the impurities of meditation. Second, look with wide open eyes, in order to integrate shamatha and vipashyana. Finally, let go completely, do not dwell on the past, do not anticipate the future, abide in the sky without clinging, cut off the coming and going of thoughts of the three times, and in this way, abide in thought-free samadhi. Thus it is said. From the Great Seal Amulet: After strongly praying to the lama on the crown of the head, relax the seventy-two thousand channels of the body and abide in a state of non-effort, this is the natural abiding of the body. The lips do not open, there is no effort of smiling, and it is free from the expression of speech, this is the natural abiding of speech. The way of looking with the eyes is free from the conceptual thoughts of wanting to meditate, and without even the thought of wanting to meditate first, but remaining in a daze and blankly, this is the natural abiding of the mind. In that state, wanting the deity

Like the sudden arising of that bewildered state, it is the standard of the first entry, also called ordinary consciousness, also called the first mind. In times of fainting, resting, etc., all sentient beings experience this state, but because they cannot recognize it, they wander in samsara. Now, one must recognize it at all times, whether eating food or holding rosaries in hand, one must maintain that bewildered state like an elephant. Similarly, no matter where you look, left, right, or at the sky, do not miss that clear, empty, and ungrasping state like the first blink of the eye, and recognize that "my preliminary practice has naturally arisen," and then remain bewildered. Moreover, in that very state of bewilderment and openness, walk naturally and easily. Even when urinating or defecating, surrounded by many attendants, be free from fear and anxiety. Whether lying down, standing up, sitting, or in any of the four postures, maintain the state of clear emptiness and non-grasping without distraction. The Sutra Collection says: "Walking, standing, lying down, and sitting, be fully endowed with mindfulness; observe like a yoke, and the mind will not be distracted while walking." In short, whether speaking, reciting sutras, chanting mantras, listening to the Dharma, or giving teachings, maintain the state of clear emptiness and non-grasping, and do not be distracted from that bewildered state. As it is said, the stainless words of the Kagyu lineage's successive masters should be taken to heart and practiced diligently, which is very important. The twenty-third Dharma talk is completed. Secondly, in detail, it is to make the ungrasped mind grasped, to make the grasped mind stable, and to make the stable mind increase. First, there is grasping the mind with an object, grasping the mind without an object, and grasping the mind with the breath. First, there is grasping outwards and grasping inwards. First, there is grasping the mind on impure objects and grasping the mind on pure objects. First, if grasping onto a coarse object, adjust the posture and key points of the body well, then look forward, and focus your awareness and gaze single-pointedly on a clear object that appears in your field of vision, such as a pillar, a wall, or a mountain, without being distracted elsewhere, and remain focused. If grasping onto a subtle object, place a thin four-finger-wide stick or two small pebbles in front of you, and choose one to grasp the mind. Moreover, if you are too attached to the object of focus, it will become a condition for conceptual thoughts, so be natural.
